Hi Everyone! I'm Eric Riedl, and I'm an Associate Professor in the Math department. I went to Notre Dame myself back in the day, living in Keough Hall and studying math and piano performance. While math is obviously a big part of my life now, my piano playing is mostly restricted to playing for my kids, ages almost 1, 3 and 5. They keep us on our toes!

My wife Denise is the Chief Innovation Officer for the City of South Bend and regularly speaks at conferences on Government and Technology. She's a perfect example of why math is for everyone: she was an English and Media Studies major in college and didn't take a single math class. After getting passionate about government and technology, she did a Master's degree at Harvard, which included many math and stats courses, and her thesis involved a statistical analysis of how fiber internet impacted underserved communities in the cities where it was rolled out. If you want to address the world's problems, math is an important tool!
After Notre Dame, I did a Ph.D. at Harvard where I met Denise, then a postdoc at the University of Illinois at Chicago before coming to Notre Dame as a professor. In Chicago, we saw the play Hamilton on the night the Cubs won the World Series, and we got engaged a few days later. My research focuses on the study of curves on solutions to systems of polynomial equations in many variables. Since the systems have many variables, there will usually be infinitely many solutions, and my goal is to study the "shape" of what the space of solutions looks like. It's fun to try to visualize things in 100-dimensional space! I'm really excited to be teaching Galvin Scholars this year, and have enjoyed getting to meet so many amazing students from so many different places!
