Dear Student,
We are required to use your legal name for this communication. The Tax Relief Act of 1997 and IRS regulation 1.6050S-1 require that universities provide 1098T forms to students enrolled each calendar year. This form will help you or your parents determine if you are eligible for a tax credit. Our records indicate that you may have reportable transactions for this year's 1098-T tax filing.
Tufts does not have your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) on your student record on SIS. Tufts is required to file a 1098T form for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and report to the IRS regardless of whether or not we have your SSN/ITIN (if you have reportable transactions). Tufts University and the individual taxpayer can be fined by the IRS for 1098T forms filed without an SSN/ITIN. Tufts has been assessed a penalty for missing SSNs in prior years. We strongly recommend that you provide your SSN/ITIN by December 31, 2024, in order to have the correct information for this IRS reporting.
International students may need a 1098T form depending on tax status. You can find more information regarding tax filing for international students on the Tufts International Center website.
Please read the instructions below carefully. If you submit your information after December 31, 2024, you will have to contact us to ensure the production of your form contains the updated SSN/ITIN.
PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL YOUR SSN/ITIN. EMAILED FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Enrolled students providing an SSN or ITIN can update their information via SIS. View instructions on how to enter your SSN in SIS.
Alumni and students not currently enrolled that attended Grafton and Boston health sciences programs, please contact your Registrar's Office directly to discuss alternative methods of updating your SSN/ITIN as you will not be able to update your records in SIS.
Alumni and students not currently enrolled that attended the Medford/Somerville and SMFA campuses that include Arts, Sciences, Engineering, and Fletcher undergraduate and graduate programs, please print and mail or fax a W-9 form to the address below:
