Celebrating PDX People
PDX People make extraordinary service part of their daily routine. To show our appreciation for these efforts, we dedicate a week to celebrating and uplifting what makes PDX one of America’s Best Airports: YOU!
This year’s celebration began with the annual PDX Excellence in Service Awards on Saturday, Sept. 9 and concluded with PDX People employee appreciation week, which ran from Tuesday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 16.
The annual PDX Excellence in Service Awards honors customer service Superstars from each of our partners – airlines, concessions, rental cars and more – all nominated by their teams. The honored Superstars, along with their families, gathered on a sunny Saturday to enjoy games, party llamas, food and drink from local favorites and of course, recognize colleagues for their extraordinary efforts.
The appreciation events featured food from local vendors and stretched from the employee parking lot to the airfield. At each celebration, attendees enjoyed food, games and won PDX People swag.
Walt Marchbanks, Port of Portland Customer Programs & Services Manager noted, "We have something really special at PDX. Airport employees treat passengers with kindness and care, so it’s very important to reciprocate when we can. For everyone involved, your work is incredibly valuable and very much appreciated."
From roadway to runway and concourse to construction, your hard work and commitment to upholding our values are appreciated. Thank you, PDX People!
Note: We had record-breaking attendance at employee appreciation week events this year. Turnout was a delightful surprise as it meant more of you than ever are tapped in to our PDX People community, but it also meant we had a greater demand for food than planned for at two events. We added some additional events to supplement, and we'll use the information gathered this year to help plan for next year.
What's New with PDX Next: Baggage Claim, D/E Bypass and Ticket Lobby
Baggage Claim: On Thursday, Sept. 28, crews will install overhead signage in two areas near bag claim 9. We’re adding more wayfinding signage as passengers are entering the building from a different direction due to the interim international arrivals corridor.
D/E BypassThere will be eight intermittent closures in the north bypass area on Tuesday, Sept. 26, through Friday, Sept. 29, from midnight to 4 a.m., while crews work on the roof. Three of these closures will also impact access from the TSA checkpoint to Concourses D and E. Crane picks will take place over the course of four early morning shifts. Each closure will last approximately 5 to 10 minutes and access to the concourses will reopen for about 15 minutes between each pick. There will be spotters in the bypass to close the area and access will be maintained to security exit doors. In urgent cases where an employee or passenger needs the bypass, work can be paused.
Ticket Lobby: Crews are relocating the central common use ticket counters to the south end of the ticket lobby in the former Starbucks location. Allegiant and Frontier will operate at the relocated ticket counters. Jet Blue, Sun Country and WestJet will operate at the south common use ticket counters. These changes will be in place by Monday, Oct. 2.

Conde Nast Traveler: Bright Ideas in Air Travel 2023
What constitutes a Bright Idea? Is it building something that’s never been done before, or finding a way to grow something that, at scale, can create outsized impact? Is it something that pushes an existing concept in a totally unexpected direction, or that fundamentally re-frames the ways in which we think about the world of travel? This Conde Nast list – which puts PDX right at the top – honors the ideas that are approaching travel’s most pressing issues with thoughtfulness and zeal, and straddle the realms of tech, design, sustainability, community, inclusion, accessibility and conservation.

PDX in Pictures
Have you seen Port of Portland Police officers pedaling around the terminal? Did you know they go through special training for bike certification?
Police officer and enthusiastic bike instructor Jack Dunteman snapped this pic of officers attending in-house training to become bike certified. As part of the training, they learn cyclist traffic laws, riding techniques and patrol procedures. Once they’re certified, they’ll actively patrol both inside and outside the airport, allowing for faster response to calls for service and effective crime prevention and detection.
