Notes of inspiration from Adult Literacy tutor Beatrix

Beatrix and Mary have been working together for a month. When Mary enrolled, we asked her what she ultimately wanted in a tutor, and she said she would love to have a tutor who was like a “buddy.” Has she found them? Keep reading!

"First off I just want to actually say wow! I can see this system doing its magic with Mary, she's getting much faster and comfortable when she's trying to read unfamiliar words and she's finally starting to consistently use the tapping method. Things are still going extremely well! I'm having fun and I think she is too!

Mary is ready for every lesson and is enthusiastic about every meeting. One really great thing I've noticed about her is the fact that she doesn't seem to be discouraged when she makes mistakes. We are SO close to having the alphabet down...the only part she messes up on is m and n; she usually forgets the n. I think within the next few weeks she'll have it down though, which is exciting!

I thought you'd be happy to know that Mary actually called me right at midnight on New Year's Eve just to wish me a happy new year! So, at the very least, we're buddies. It certainly put a smile on my face to hear from her that night."

A big thank you to Mountain Xpress for hosting Give Local again this year to raise money for 44 area nonprofits!

I have been with Literacy Together since: 2020.

Things I'd love to learn in my lifetime:

Hebrew, how to make bread and belly dancing.

My favorite things to do are:

Spending time with my kids Layla and Micael; walking, dancing and doing yoga; traveling and learning new things!

My favourite quote:

What I like best about Literacy Together:

Working and interacting on a daily basis with people who are taking action to be the change they want to see in the world.

Our community is getting stronger every day!

50 NEW VOLUNTEER TUTORS have joined Literacy Together in November and December! Is someone you know ready to work with us? Please help us spread the word! People can sign up online to volunteer or they can send an email to laura@lit-together.org.

Thanks to Greg Harrison of The Hop Ice Cream Café for reading Dolly Parton's Imagination Library's books at "Breakdancing and a Book" in January! This is a fun family-friendly event that takes place every Friday at 2:30 pm on Facebook. It promotes lifelong learning through reading (and dancing!). Greg will also be having Literacy Together as a guest during February. Thanks so much! You can register a child online to get a free book every month from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
