THE N/NE HOUSING STRATEGY: ONE YEAR LATER


On January 28, 2015, the Portland Housing Bureau went before City Council with a plan to begin to address the legacy of displacement in North and Northeast Portland. To ensure the highest accountability to the community, an Oversight Committee was formed to evaluate our work from the community’s perspective and report back to City Council every year over the next five years on where we’ve had successes and where we have more work to do.
Last month, on February 3, 2016, members of the N/NE Oversight Committee presented the first report to City Council on our progress toward the goals we set forth a year ago. Overall, the Committee counted the development of a preference policy and a successful home repair program as accomplishments, but called for more progress in developing a land bank.

GRANT WAREHOUSE OPEN HOUSE:
Get a First Look at Designs and Give Your Feedback. 
You're invited to join PCRI, Gerding Edlen, Colas Construction, and Carleton Hart Architecture on Monday, March 14 for the first open house and community forum on the new housing development proposed for NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (between Cook and Ivy streets) for your chance to see initial designs for the housing and commercial space and give your feedback.

N/NE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE: WHAT'S NEW IN 2016

The next Oversight Committee meeting will take place from 6pm – 8pm on Thursday, March 10 at New Song Community Church (2511 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd – community room entry on Russell). Join us to hear updates on the Preference Policy, Grant Warehouse, and what’s next for the new affordable housing funds in the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area. We will also welcome new Committee member Chris Guinn of Dwell Realty. Chris says:

Also beginning in March, Oversight Committee meetings will be filmed by Portland Community Media and broadcast on Channel 30. The March 10 meeting is scheduled to air on the following dates:

Friday, March 25 at 11:30 am
RED CROSS PREPAREDNESS FAIR

Help prepare your family, organization, and community for disasters large and small at the Red Cross Preparedness Fair on March 29. Drop by the Red Portland headquarters at 3131 N Vancouver Ave any time from 9am - 4:30pm and step inside a next generation emergency response vehicle and bloodmobile. Learn lifesaving CPR and the science behind blood banking and transfusion. Give back through on-site volunteer opportunities supporting our veterans and patients in need. HOMEOWNERSHIP PROGRAMS UPDATE

At their January meeting, the Oversight Committee also heard updates on homeownership programs planned for N/NE Portland. The N/NE Housing Strategy dedicated $5 million toward creating homeownership opportunities. In October, we asked community partners to submit proposals for how they would use that funding to increase homeownership opportunities for the N/NE community. We were pleased to be able to announce funding awards to both PCRI and the African American Alliance for Homeownership (AAAH) in collaboration with Hacienda CDC, NAYA, Proud Ground, and Habitat for Humanity.
