NOVEMBER 12, 2020
Dear Members,
Earlier this week we were blessed with fabulous weather and fantastic company at the 2020 AZLTA Doug Yonko Memorial Golf Tournament. Although we have all experienced many challenges this year and the loss of a beloved friend and colleague, it was wonderful to get together as a community in honor of Doug. I would like to extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude to Doug's brothers, Greg and David, for joining us as we launched the Doug Yonko Memorial Education Scholarship.
A portion of the proceeds of the golf tournament will be dedicated to a new industry education scholarship in Doug’s name for an individual seeking a career in the travel, tourism, sports and/or hospitality industry. We are incredibly grateful for your support of this new memorial scholarship.
I cannot say thank you enough to board member Danielle Russell who has been instrumental in helping AzLTA grow its partnership with Phoenix Country Club and with the Charles Schwab Cup. In addition, thank you to our generous sponsors and attendees who went above and beyond to make this year's event a success.
We hope to see each of you on the course next year!
Sincerely,
Kim Grace Sabow
President & CEO

NATIONAL UPDATE
Over the weekend, the election for President was called in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden, after days of vote-counting in several battleground states.
The Senate is currently 50-48, with Republicans leading the chamber. Both Georgia Senate races will advance to a runoff on January 5. Democrats will maintain control of the House of Representatives but with a slimmer majority.
Congress is expected to return to Washington in mid-November. We will continue to urge Congressional leaders to reach a bipartisan, bicameral agreement on a coronavirus stimulus package this year to help the most affected industries and workers.
ARIZONA UPDATE
Ballot counting has just about finished across the state. Republicans will maintain majorities in the Arizona Senate (16-14) and the House of Representatives (31-29). In the Senate, Republicans lost one seat with the defeat of Senator Kate Brophy-McGee.

  • Senate Majority Whip: Sonny Borrelli
  • Senate President Pro Tempore: Vince Leach
House Majority

Special thank you to our Government Affairs Team at Molera Alvarez for the election update.
PHOENIX TRAVEL GUIDELINES
On Oct. 6, the Arizona Department of Health Services issued the COVID-19 Recommendations for Private Events, which notes health and safety practices that the State of Arizona has recommended for all events that are not open to the general public. This definition permits conventions, meetings and trade shows to occur in Greater Phoenix should the events be labeled "private" and not allow the general public to attend.
Note: Ticketed events (i.e. professional sports games, fairs, etc.) are considered public events. Indoor expos for registered participants, such as the Rock n' Roll Marathon series, are considered private events.
PHOENIX VISITOR INDUSTRY WEEKLY TREND TRACKER
The Visit Phoenix research team continues to stay in front of the changing trends and visitor industry research. They have compiled a weekly trend tracker for the industry.
AHLA SAFE STAY GUIDELINES
Safety and cleanliness remain the top concerns for hotel guests and employees. This is why the Safe Stay initiative continues to be a leading priority for AHLA and our industry.
AHLA Safe Stay has been endorsed by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Association for Linen Management, which represents the personnel involved in the textile care industry. Additionally, Dr. Murray Cohen, who has a distinguished career as a certified industrial hygienist and former infectious diseases epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and World Health Organization (WHO), has also announced his endorsement.
The latest version of the Safe Stay protocols includes newly-released CDC guidance on hotel operations including:
  • Meetings and events
  • Elevator operations
  • Foodservice operations
  • Workplace health safety plans
The Safe Stay guidelines also feature the latest CDC recommendations on daily room cleanings to limit in-person contact: “Guestrooms occupied by the same customer over multiple days should not be cleaned daily unless requested.”
