Make Your Voice Heard: COACHE Survey has been launched
Over the years UMKC has participated in the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey. Our most recent participation was in 2017. Much has changed at UMKC since that time, and it only seems appropriate that we gather information about faculty perceptions regarding faculty workplace experiences to help inform us about programs and practices that support faculty at UMKC. An email from the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education was sent last week inviting all full time tenured, tenure track and ranked non-tenure track faculty to participate in the survey . Please take a few minutes to complete the survey to ensure that your voice is heard!

“Often Wrong, Never Uncertain”: Large Language Models and AI Literacy
Faculty discussion on generative AI tools March 3rd at 1:00pm!
The academic and popular media is rife with reports about ChatGPT and other large language models. Pundits predict generative AI tools will inspire innovation, plagiarism, and other positive and negative consequences; professors ponder how to deal with them; and students wonder if it’s OK to use them.
To help UMKC faculty understand these tools, their potential, and their limits, four experts will make brief presentations and field questions during an informational session from 1-2 p.m. Friday, March 3, in Zoom.

Entrepreneurship Innovation Grants
In a coordinated effort to expand entrepreneurship opportunities across UMKC, the “Entrepreneurship Innovation Grants” (EIG) program was launched in 2021 with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. With continued support from the Foundation, we are proud to again provide new opportunities for funding for cross-campus entrepreneurship initiatives. These opportunities could include course development, program creation, technology commercialization, partnerships with community organizations and promoting social entrepreneurship and more. Our comprehensive view of entrepreneurship promotes the growth mindset, innovation, and exploration of entrepreneurial viability.
The total EIG program funding of $1,750,000 is available for grants over a five-year period (calendar years 2023-2027). Grants in this program will likely range from $5,000 to $75,000 per grant, though other amounts will be considered depending on assessment of the proposals received. Grant proposals may be for one year or two.
The team will be hosting two information sessions via Zoom. Click either link below to join a session. Each information session will have a short presentation and an opportunity to ask questions.
March 1 at 12:00-1:00 pm
March 9 at 12:00-1:00 pm
The application period is now open. Proposals must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. Saturday, April 1. More information and an application form are available on the EIG program website.

3R@3 Research Speaker Series
Dr. Ye Wang, March 16th, 2023, 3-4pm
During part one of a two-part workshop, Text as Data, Dr. Ye Wang and her collaborators will share the work on an automated data warehouse design that is supporting collective impact across 31 colleges and universities to better support STEM students with disabilities. Dr. Petri, Dr. Yugyung Lee, Dr. Wang, and a NSF-via-Auburn-University team are working with colleges from the Northern Marianas to Maine and rely on the data system to automate all of the information requests and reporting and to permit each college to tailor parts of the instruments to fit their culture and needs. Part one will be followed by Q&A with Dr. Petri, Dr. Yugyung Lee, and Dr. Wang.
Part two of the workshop all participants will use WeListen, another text-as-data tool, to provide feedback on the automated data warehouse design. Participants will be able to see how WeListen immediately prepares and presents data for the purpose of gaining insights to what is possible. Part two will be followed by a dialogue between Dr. Wang and Dr. Blanton on the implication of Text as Data for Digital Humanities.
The UMKC Office of Research Development and CAFE Research & Creativity Pillar hosts the speaker series where UMKC researchers share their scholarship, research, and vision for the next generation of research. Learn something new and celebrate research at UMKC by joining us each third Thursday of the month at 3:00 P.M. for our Research Speakers Series. The Text as Data workshop series is co-sponsored by UMKC Digital Humanities.
