Kathleen Holland Travels the Extra Mile for Great Service
Kathleen Holland (she/her) with ABM was nominated by her manager after taking steps to solve a stranded traveler's dilemma:
“A passenger approached Kathleen as she was providing directions and assistance by the TSA checkpoint. The passenger had just arrived but missed her connection due to a flight delay.
The passenger was despondent and quite anxious. Kathleen guided the passenger to her airline’s ticket counter to rebook her flight, however the next flight wasn’t until the following day.
Kathleen then helped the passenger book a hotel and get a taxi. To top it off, Kathleen even checked back later that evening to confirm the passenger arrived at the hotel safely.
Kathleen demonstrated knowledgeable, friendly and respectful customer service that truly went above and beyond, and I am proud to nominate her for a PDX People customer service award.”

Holiday Travel Starts Now at PDX
Passenger volumes are nearing pre-pandemic levels and during the November holiday travel period – the Friday before Thanksgiving to the Monday following the holiday – PDX expects to welcome a total of about a half million travelers. The peak travel day this year is expected to be Sunday, Nov. 27, with more than 49,000 travelers forecasted. Pre-pandemic (2019) the busiest travel days around the Thanksgiving holiday saw 55,000 to 56,000 travelers.
With a bustling airport and construction changes, encourage your friends and family to keep three things top of mind: 1) Arrive at least two hours prior to flight departure, especially for flights leaving between 5 and 9 a.m., 2) know available resources for travel assistance, including all-user restrooms, lactation rooms, our new sensory room and pet relief areas, and 3) keep stress in check with unique airport activities, including listening to our volunteer musicians, viewing our art installations or watching a movie in the Hollywood Theatre microcinema.

Toys for Tots Campaign Launches at PDX
Our PDX TSA team is partnering with the Marine Corps Reserves on the annual Toys for Tots campaign, and there are convenient drop-off points right at the airport! This is the 75th year of the event that delivers toys directly to children who'd otherwise go without, and they'd love your support to make sure the holiday season is extra magical. If you'd like to participate, please donate a new, unwrapped toy with at least a $10 value. Collection bins are in the TSA offices on the second and fourth floors of the Rental Car Center and at the supervisor podiums at the TSA checkpoints, and toy pickup is on Friday, Dec. 16. If you know a local child who is in need and has a toy wish, head to the Marine Toys for Tots website.

Say Cheers with Country Cat
With Thanksgiving coming up next week, there's no better time to learn to make a mocktail for your holiday celebration. The Country Cat’s Caleb Drost created a “Zero Proof” section for their drinks menu, and you can learn how to make your own. Watch Michael, a Country Cat bartender, share how to make not one, but two, non-alcoholic drinks.
First up is The Mockingbird, a bright and refreshing beverage that combines lime juice, peach bitters and grapefruit soda. Then he'll teach you how to make a shrub – a sweetened vinegar-based syrup, in this case made from fresh strawberries – which can be topped off with soda water. Just because you're not drinking doesn't mean you can't have fun: Cheers!

PDX in Pictures
Over the last two weeks, we held two events that turned trash into treasure. Both weeks featured FOD walks, where participants picked up “foreign object debris” from the ramp in exchange for giveaways and gift cards. Special thanks to Garrin Black, “The FOD Father,” for organizing this great event that made the airfield a safer place to operate.
Then, we held the annual PDX fall cleanup, where tenants cleared out their storage units and shoppers (aka airport employees and construction workers) browsed what’s basically a free garage sale. The coolest find? A fully functional Keurig coffee maker!
Thanks to everyone who participated, picked up or brought items for proper disposal or reuse.
