Welcoming Jill McPherson, a Familiar Face in a New Role
Jill may be new to her role as the Port of Portland's Customer Program and Services Manager, but she's been part of the PDX community and the PDX People program for more than two decades. Chances are you've seen her around the airport, handing out swag alongside her predecessor, Walt Marchbanks, helping out at Passport to Inclusion events, or connecting with employees across the terminal. In her role, she'll be your recognition champion, ambassador, event planner, and Jill-of-all-trades when it comes to PDX People.
For those who haven't met you yet, can you introduce yourself and share a little about your career journey and

connection to the PDX People program?
After 24 years in the restaurant industry, I pivoted to Horizon Air in 2003. As a baby boomer, I faced a steep learning curve with travel, airports, and computers. Despite the challenges, I advanced from passenger service agent to trainer, acting supervisor, and eventually supervisor. I officially retired from Alaska Air Group in 2018. Just two days later, I joined the Port of Portland as a customer relations supervisor. I frequently brag to my airline friends that working for the Port feels like heaven on earth. I’ve worked on the Airport Operations team and now on the Customer Experience team.
As you step into this role, what are your top priorities?
While at Horizon, I became one of the original PDX People working committee members. While members and faces have changed over the years, our core mission of “raising the bar for customer service” remains the same. It feels incredible to have come full circle, and I'm proud to be leading the working committee today. I’m honored to continue the great work of my predecessors while adding my own style to the mix. Engaging with all employees, strengthening our ties with the PDX Accessibility committee, and planning some fantastic employee events are my top priorities.
What do you love most about the PDX People program, and what are you looking forward to in the months ahead?
It may sound cliché, but it’s truly the people – our PDX family – who energize me every single day. I'm incredibly proud to work in one of the world's most beautiful airports, but what makes it special is the passion and commitment to excellence that PDX employees deliver.
On a more personal note, what's a fun fact or something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m usually known for being nice, but that changes the second I get on the tennis court! I have a competitive side with a strong backhand. I play pickleball too, but tennis is my main game. When I’m not at the club, you can find me in our huge vegetable garden and orchard. Fun fact: We yielded an incredible 800 kiwis from our trees last year!

Be Knowledgeable:
Working Smart in Hot Weather |
As temperatures rise, it’s important to take steps to stay healthy and safe on the job. Hot weather can be risky for you and your coworkers, but following a few simple guidelines can help everyone stay protected and feel their best.
- Dress for hot conditions in loose-fitting, light-colored clothes.
- Drink water every 15 minutes to stay hydrated. Take a moment to fill up your water bottle before you get to work to stay cool, safe and quenched during your workday.
| |
- Take frequent breaks in shady, cool or air-conditioned areas.
If you see someone who is experiencing headaches, dizziness, and nausea (heat exhaustion) or dry, hot skin, confusion, and convulsions (heat stroke), act quickly and get help. In case of emergency at PDX, call 503.460.4000. For non-emergencies, call 503.460.4747.
If you use TriMet to travel, keep an eye on their alerts page as temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit may cause delays. Read more about hot weather and how it affects TriMet.

The sunshine has us feeling ready for some summer fun, which means it's summer street fair time. If you see passengers wondering what the excitement is all about, give them the inside scoop: Parades are happening in the terminal through August, featuring lovable llamas, adorable therapy dogs, live music, samples, and special deals from our favorite concessions! And don't forget the summer fun continues for you with your PDX employee discount, which can mean up to 20% off.
