Greg Victory, Executive Director, Tufts Career Center
Dear Parents and Families,
It was so exciting this past week to welcome the Class of 2022 – as well as our transfer and graduate students – to the Herd. This really is my favorite time of the academic year, and has been for my nearly 20 years in higher education. The anticipation, excitement and wonder that appears on the faces of new students is simply contagious. Our returning students are also energized by stories of transformational summer experiences in research, civic engagement, and/or internships both domestically and abroad. The Career Center is grateful for the opportunity to engage with your student (new or returning), to share in those stories, and “to foster transformational experiences which shape the lifelong professional, academic and personal development of Tufts students and alumni.”

Academic Standing: Updated Criteria for BA and BS Students

The criteria for determining the academic standing of BA and BS students have been revised as a result of recommendations provided to the Academic Standing Committees for the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering by the Mental Health Task Force. The criteria have also been adjusted to account for the Change to the Credit Hour System in June 2018. (Please note that there are separate criteria for determining the standing of BFA students, which remain unchanged.)

Beginning in Fall 2018:

  • A BA/BS student will be sent an academic alert at the end of any semester in which they fail one course of any SHU value and/or earn fewer than 12 SHUs but more than 4 SHUs.
  • A BA/BS student will be placed on academic probation at the end of any semester in which they earn 4 SHUs or fewer and/or earn a semester GPA lower than 2.0 and/or fail to make satisfactory progress as defined by number of credits earned at the end of any semester beyond their first semester (see table below).
  • To return to good academic standing after probation, in the following semester a BA/BS student must complete a minimum of 12.0 SHUs and earn a minimum semester GPA of 2.0.
  • In terms of total credits earned, Satisfactory Progress for all BA/BS students will be defined as follows:

 Fall
 Spring
 First-Year
 12 SHUs
 24 SHUs
 Sophomore
 39 SHUs
 54 SHUs
 Junior
 70 SHUs
 86 SHUs
 Senior
 102 SHUs
 120 SHUs
Full information about Academic Standing for BA/BS students can be found on the Academic Advising website and in the 2018-19 Bulletin. A comparison of Academic Policies before and after the June 2018 credit conversion is also available online. Students with questions about Academic Standing are invited to contact their Advising Dean (Liberal Arts BA/BS, Liberal Arts BFA, or Engineering).
