RECENT NEWS
- GRANT AWARDS: CURes was excited to receive notification of three grants, with projects that are starting right now! First, the Restorative Justice Project received $270,000 from an anonymous foundation for the project, Southern California Restorative Justice Initiative. Second, our green infrastructure research team received $75,000 from Edison International to conduct urban tree canopy prioritizations and implement school garden in South Los Angeles and complete an inventory of climate adaptation organizations in San Bernardino. Third, we received $35,000 from the Ballona Wetlands Conservancy to continue our research on the Ballona Freshwater Marsh.
- ENVIRONMENTAL LECTURE SERIES: The most recent talk in our Environmental Lecture Series was held on Tuesday, February 25th from 4:30-5:30 PM in the McIntosh Center (University Hall 3999). From the College of Businesss Administration, Dr. Trevor Zink spoke to a packed room on the hidden advantages and disadvantages of recycling and its impact on the economy.
- NEW PUBLICATION FROM CURES MANAGING DIRECTOR: Dr. Michele Romolini is a co-author on a new BioScience article, “Theoretical Perspectives of the Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Conceptual Evolution in a Social–Ecological Research Project.” The article explores the theoretical advances made over two decades of the Baltimore Ecosystem Study, one of two US Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites. COMING SOON- UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM: The 12th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium is taking place on March 21st in University Hall. Three of CURes undergraduate students will present their research through a series of presentations and panels. There will also be workshops on a range of topics, from finding a mentor to crafting the perfect abstract.
- 17TH ANNUAL THEODORE PAYNE NATIVE PLANT GARDEN TOUR: The Theodore Payne Foundation is hosting their annual Native Plant Garden Tour on Saturday, March 28th, and Sunday, March 29th. Tours showcase 42 gardens, and will take place from 10 A.M. - 5 P.M. This year, from 5 P.M - 8 P.M on Saturday, March 28th, TPF will also be hosting a special 60th anniversary party, which includes dinner and drinks at the Gottlieb Native Garden. Tickets for the tour and the anniversary party can be purchased on their website, by phone call, or in-person at the Theodore Payne Foundation.

UPCOMING EVENTS- GNG GREEN EARTH FILM FESTIVAL: CURes is co-hosting the 7th Annual GNG Green Earth Film Festival alongside the Gottlieb Native Garden and LMU's School of Film and Television! The festival will take place at LMU's Playa Vista Campus on April 4th-5th. The program for this weekend includes screenings of environmental films from both our students and our finalists, a guided nature-meditation, and a fun closing night party! Register for tickets now.
- ENVIRONMENTAL LECTURE SERIES: Dr. Tyler Harlan will be giving a lecture in the McIntosh Center (University Hall 3999) from 4:30 - 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, April 16th. Dr. Harlan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban and Environmental Studies whose research centers on green development and its socio-environmental impacts in China.
- LA TIMES FESTIVAL OF BOOKS, STORIES AND IDEAS: CURes will participate in the 25th Annual LA Times Festival of Books, Stories and Ideas on Saturday, April 18th, and Sunday, April 19th. The event will take place at USC, where CURes will have two tables for Dr. Eric Strauss's book, Hummingbirds of the Gottlieb Native Garden.
- URBAN ECOLOGY WORKSHOP WITH DR. STRAUSS: Dr. Eric Strauss will be giving a "Yoga, Mindfulness, and Social Change" workshop on Saturday, May 16. This event will take place at the Playa Vista Campus, which can be accessed through free street parking or a free shuttle service from the main Westchester campus.
- JUSTICE IN JESUIT HIGHER EDUCATION CONFERENCE: The 2020 Commitment to Justice Conference will be hosted at Georgetown University from June 3rd - 6th. Dr. Eric Strauss, CURes Executive Director, and Schoene Mahmood, Manager of the Restorative Justice Project, will be attending and presenting their work.
