Happy 2025, and welcome to the first CHDCM newsletter of the Spring semester!
The break between Fall and Spring semesters is brief, especially for those of you teaching or taking Winter Session courses…but hopefully this message finds you restored and refreshed, and ready for the semester ahead!
Also, as we kick off the Spring semester, I would note that we’re only a few days away from the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As part of the celebrations taking place across NJ and the nation, SHU has an amazing annual event celebrating and reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy. Anyone can attend, and SHU undergraduate students even have the option to earn 1 credit toward graduation! Also, if you’re interested, I will be among those giving a presentation during the course of the day—I will be talking about a chapter from my book-in-progress, focused on “white backlash” and rituals of white supremacy. Interested? Find out more here!
With that, I encourage you to read on, and catch up on the news and notes from our College community. I wish you all a smooth and enjoyable start to the semester, and hope you’re able to stay warm despite this cold weather!
Finally—speaking of the Spring semester—if you are a CHDCM student and you haven’t registered yet for your classes, now is a great time to do so! As we kick of classes today, don’t miss the chance to add the classes you want and need for this semester before add/drop ends!

The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) offers Seton Hall students an exciting opportunity to engage in academic competition while exploring applied and professional ethics. Through preparation and debate on pressing ethical issues, participants gain a deeper understanding of ethics and develop skills to articulate and defend their positions in public forums.
On November 23, 2024, Seton Hall University showcased its dedication to fostering meaningful ethical discussions and intellectual engagement among undergraduate students. Under the guidance of Dr. Abe Zakhem, the university's Ethics Bowl Team participated in the IEB Regional Ethics Bowl, debating a range of complex topics, including non-disclosure agreements, animal rights, technology in education, AI in grieving, and facial recognition technology.
The team excelled in the competition, finishing as the first seed after going undefeated in the preliminary rounds. Their performance demonstrated remarkable passion, rhetorical skill, and a solid foundation in ethical theory, earning them a national bid to the International Association for Professional and Practical Ethics Conference in February 2025. At the regional event, Seton Hall placed third overall, competing against teams from prominent universities such as Yale, Texas State, Georgia State, Manhattan, and Baylor.
Please contact the Team's co-directors, Cathy Zizik (College of Human Development, Culture, and Media) at Catherine.Zizik@shu.edu and Dr. Abe Zakhem (College of Arts and Sciences - Department of Philosophy) at Abe.Zakhem@shu.edufor more information and how you can be a part of our very successful team.
