Salvēte, amīcī!
We are delighted to share our fourth annual newsletter, looking back on 2021. We continued to teach, conduct research, and engage in service and professional activities while accommodating COVID safety protocols. A number of us had faculty-led, study abroad and research travel curtailed in the summer of 2021, and we are very much looking forward to getting back on those planes this May.
The department has been actively revising our curriculum in the last few years, and we have a number of new courses on offer, such as:
- Freshman-level courses on the Spartans and Classics and science fiction;
- 200-level courses on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, performing Greek tragedy, and the archaeology of Pompeii; and
- 300-level courses on ancient medicine, manipulating public opinion, and dreaming in the ancient world.
In October, we welcomed Molly Pasco-Pranger from Ole Miss, and Aleydis van de Moortel from Tennessee, to conduct a review of the department, which is something that we do every seven years. It was a great visit, with lots of positive feedback about our program, which was so nice to hear after a tough few years of teaching and conducting research under the shadow of COVID. We continue to excel in teaching, mentoring students, regularly publishing and presenting our research, and serving our university and professional communities. Moving forward, we will focus on raising awareness of our department, recruiting majors, and engaging in more fundraising activities to support our students who would like to study abroad.
