One of the greatest privileges of being Director of the Mongan Institute is recognizing faculty who have joined our family of team scientists. In a normal year, these new faculty would have been introduced in person at faculty meetings or chance encounters in the hallways. But this has been anything but a normal year. With this in mind, I would like to selectively provide a brief introduction to 18 new members who have joined Mongan, including 6 core and 12 affiliate faculty.
The following are new Core Faculty who have joined our ranks over the past year:
Sara Barmettler, MD is an allergist/immunologist in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology Clinical Epidemiology Program and Instructor in Medicine with research expertise in primary and secondary immunodeficiency including medication-induced immunodeficiencies.
Tejaswini Dhawale, MD is an Instructor in Medicine who conducts research on improving communication in cancer care, including understanding communication breakdowns that impact patients with cancer and developing interventions to facilitate difficult conversations between patients and clinicians.
Allison Bryant Mantha, MD, MPH is Vice-Chair for Quality, Equity, and Safety in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology who studies disparities in obstetric care and outcomes in low-income and minority women, including those with unintended pregnancy and uptake of prenatal screening and testing and cesarean delivery.
Joanna Streck, PhD is an Instructor in Psychology who develops and evaluates smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction strategies for underserved populations including those with co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs) and medical conditions such as cancer and COPD.
Nneka, Ufere, MD is an Instructor in Medicine in the Cancer Outcomes Research and Education Program who develops and evaluates interventions aimed at improving the quality of life and end-of-life care for patients with advanced liver disease and their caregivers.
Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD is Founding Director of Integrated Brain Health Clinical and Research Program and Associate Professor of Psychology who conducts research using novel, technology-enhanced mind-body and lifestyle interventions across the lifespan for patients with acute and chronic medical illness and their families.

Emily Aaronson, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine and Associate Chief Quality Officer who conducts research on the intersection of emergency medicine and palliative care spearheading improvements in the quality of care for patients with serious illness in the Emergency Department and helping to lead efforts to improve outcomes for Sepsis. Nicole Benson, MD is an Instructor in Psychiatry and Associate Chief Medical Information Officer at McLean Hospital who uses data science and clinical informatics to study the ways child and adult patients access and receive mental health care to identify and address disparities in clinical outcomes. Marisela Dy-Hollins, MD, MSCR is an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Pediatric Movement Disorders at MGH whose work focuses on health disparities in the care of tics and Tourette Syndrome (TS), including developing, implementing, and disseminating interventions to reduce disparities and provide equitable care and delivery for patients with TS. Linda Emanuel, MD, PhD is Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Northwestern Medicine whose work focuses on palliative and end-of-life care research; geriatrics and aging research; patient safety; family caregiver education; and economic resilience for caregivers. Brent Forester, MD, MSc is Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Chief of Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at McLean Hospital, and Medical Director of Dementia Care for Population Health Management whose research on dementia spans brain imaging studies, novel pharmacological treatment interventions, and innovative models of care including system-wide initiatives to enhance the assessment and treatment of individuals with dementia. Dhaval Kolte, MD, PhD is a Structural Interventional Cardiologist at MGH and an Instructor in Medicine who researches the quality of care and outcomes of patients with valvular heart disease undergoing transcatheter valve interventions. Kathleen Lyons, ScD, OTR/L is Professor of Occupational Therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions who is a rehabilitation scientist and occupational therapist whose research focuses on supportive care in oncology with the goal of developing and testing ways to support people living with cancer to fully participate in meaningful activities, life roles, and society through theory-driven and evidence-based rehabilitation. Vanessa Merker, PhD is an Instructor in Neurology who conducts health services research focusing on neurofibromatosis and other rare disorders to improve healthcare delivery specializing in qualitative and mixed methods research and participatory research approaches that engage patients and their family members in the design, conduct, and dissemination of health research. Olivia Okereke, MD, SM is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and in Epidemiology in the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health who employs epidemiologic methods to identify modifiable factors involved in healthy mental aging and translates and applies knowledge gained into strategies for large-scale prevention of adverse mental aging outcomes, including depression and cognitive decline. Margaret Samuels-Kalow, MD, MPhil, MSHP is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine who designs and tests interventions to reduce disparities in emergency care and improve subsequent outcomes for vulnerable populations including a specific focus on studying contributions of social determinants of health. Angela Wangari Walter, PhD, MPH, MSW is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health at Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and a who is a health services researcher and implementation scientist focusing on preventing and treating alcohol and other drug use disorders (AUD) and co-occurring conditions including mental illness, Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS

As you can see, this recent cohort of faculty represents an extraordinary array of different methods, specialties, disciplines, and topic areas. While further adding to our capacity to engage in innovative, transdisciplinary, collaborative research, these faculty also reflect our mission “dedicated to achieving health equity and improving the lives of people with complex health needs through research and training in population and health care delivery team science.” We are delighted to once again welcome these new members into our community and look forward to their contributions in taking on the most challenging and complex problems in health and health care.

Nneka Ufere, MD, Joins Mongan Institute as Core Faculty Member

Please join us in welcoming Nneka Ufere, MD, to the Mongan Institute as a new Core Faculty member. Dr. Ufere is an Early Career Investigator at the MGH Cancer Outcomes Research and Education Program and an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her research interests center around palliative and supportive care and informed decision-making with the goal of developing interventions aimed at improving the quality of life and end-of-life care for patients with advanced liver disease and their caregivers.

Please join us in welcoming Ana-Maria Vranceanu, PhD, to the Mongan Institute as a new Core Faculty member. Dr. Vranceanu is the Founding Director of Integrated Brain Health Clinical and Research Program (IBHCRP) and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. She is also the Co-Director of Grants Consultations and Support at the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Joanna Streck, PhD, Joins Mongan Institute as Core Faculty Member

Please join us in welcoming Joanna Streck, PhD, to the Mongan Institute as a new Core Faculty member. Dr. Streck is an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. Her research interests include development and evaluation of smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction strategies for underserved populations such as those with comorbid other substance use disorders (SUDs) and medical comorbidities, as well as, improving assessment of non-tobacco SUDs and triage to SUD treatment in healthcare settings

Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA, Received the Distinguished Achievement Award

Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA, an adult and pediatric obesity medicine physician in the Department of Medicine Endocrine Division, has received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Rollins School of Public Health Alumni Association. This award is presented annually to an alumnus/a who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of public health. Given in recognition of a lifetime of career achievement, recipients exemplify dedication to the public health ideals of promoting health and preventing disease.

Daniel Singer, MD Received the John M. Eisenberg Award
| |
Daniel Singer, MD, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard and was awarded the 2021 John M. Eisenberg Award from the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM). The award is “in recognition of exemplary leadership in the practical application of medical decision-making research.” The award was given to Dr. Singer for his work addressing the anticoagulation decision for patients with atrial fibrillation. The Mongan Institute in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a full time Administrative Coordinator. Founded in 2015, the Mongan Institute is dedicated to supporting research across MGH in the areas of population and health care delivery science. The Institute bridges research spanning data science to delivery science, and evaluative science to implementation science including a variety of disciplines and methods such as epidemiology, predictive analytics, cost-effectiveness, health policy, decision science, health disparities, health intervention and implementation research.
- Data Analyst I - 3156217
The Mongan Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a full-time Data Analyst to support research at the Mongan Institute. The Data Analyst will work with investigators on externally funded research studies that focus that range from observational large data set analyses to longitudinal intervention and implementation research studies. The Mongan Institute is an innovative transdisciplinary research institute at MGH consisting of 13 centers and programs spanning data science to delivery science with over 115 faculty, over 30 research fellows, as well as medical student and undergraduate trainees.

The Clinical & Translational Epidemiology Unit (CTEU) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School is seeking applications for a research faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The faculty member will have an opportunity to build a robust research program. Candidates with the skills to develop, implement, disseminate, and evaluate tools and technologies that leverage epidemiologic methods to address chronic disease outcomes, including but not limited to cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases, and diseases of aging. Qualitative and Mixed Methods Capacity Building Workshop for Research Teams
Qualitative and Mixed Methods Capacity Building Workshop for Research Teams will be held on Friday, November 5th from 10am-3pm. This course is intended for research teams who are planning or conducting a qualitative and mixed methods research project. Workshop participants will learn to plan and conduct qualitative and mixed methods research as a critical skill set for amplifying stakeholder perspectives in all phases of health research and for reducing current and future health equity challenges. The agenda includes both high-level topics and operational/procedural topics primarily for the qualitative portion of the research. We encourage applications from teams which include 1) collaborators outside of MGH, 2) collaborators who are under-represented in medicine and related fields (including but not limited to psychology, nursing, epidemiology, allied health), and 3) project topics that are focused on health in underserved populations.
