The importance of welcoming diverse perspectives |
When thinking about diversity, equity, and inclusion, race often sits at the center of our work. As we enter Disability Pride Month, it's important to remind ourselves that organizations must honor and acknowledge all lived experiences and intersectional identities — including those of people with disabilities. Including all voices when designing and implementing our efforts is crucial to creating a sustained DEI strategy.

A warm welcome to our new Leadership Council members.
This July we’re welcoming six new local leaders to the Partners in Diversity leadership council and sending a thank you to those whose terms have ended. The selected members are senior level leaders who are advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the community, and exemplify our mission and values. As part of the council, these leaders will guide the organization’s strategic plan and ensure its success. With diversity at the core of our mission, we are proud to be welcoming a group with varied lived experiences and professional backgrounds.

How do we respond to hate and bias in the workplace? Join the conversation at our next Breakfast for Champions.
Breakfast for Champions is in person this month and we’re excited to invite members to the PNC Live Studio on July 12 for an important discussion on how organizations can support employees when bias incidents happen at work.
It is likely that your organization has dedicated time to building and fostering a positive work environment where employees feel safe and valued, but what happens when an internal or external hate crime or bias incident takes place and disrupts your organization's culture? Members of Partners in Diversity are invited to join us for an open and candid discussion with a group of professionals who have first-hand experience in addressing hate and bias incidents in the workplace. To participate, your organization must be a member of Partners in Diversity. A light breakfast, coffee, and networking time will be provided. A special thank you to Port of Portland and PNC Bank for sponsoring this month's Breakfast for Champions session.

| How do we make physical spaces inclusive? Listen to our latest Equity Conversations podcast episode.
For most companies, the office or workspace is a big investment. Everyone who enters this space perceives and accesses it differently. In this episode, we explore the idea of sharing design power with those not typically involved in the process of creating buildings and offices. Joseph Nguyen, an expert in commercial design, discusses the steps that designers, architects and organizations should take to develop an inclusive space. Month of July: Disability Pride Month
|
|
|
July marks Disability Pride Month and the anniversary of the monumental signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Signed on July 26, 1990, the act paved the way for people with disabilities to have equitable opportunity and access within society by prohibiting discrimination in employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and in access to state and local government services. This month gives us all the opportunity to reflect on the systemic and internalized ableism that continues to be embedded within our communities and institutions and what changes can be made to make these truly equitable. For insight on some of the systems that continue to oppress people of color with disabilities, listen to our Equity Conversations podcast on the intersections of racism and ableism. Most importantly, this is a time for the disabled community to proudly take up space, fearlessly advocate for representation, and celebrate the perspectives and progress that has been achieved by disability rights leaders.
