Dear Postdoctoral Community,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. I am excited about the opportunities that are coming in the fall. We have many upcoming events, including National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which will take place September 19-23.

This month Stacey Stachell will be presenting the Critical Conversation series starting on July 7 with "Beyond Time Management". Information on the series and how to register is below.

We will have our second SpeakEasy Talk Series on July 21. The June SpeakEasy was a great evening of networking and fellowship - and learning about the research in our postdoc community. The SpeakEasy provides opportunities to discuss your work and hear about other postdocs' research.

Finally, the Vanderbilt Postdoc Association Board elections are happening this month. Make your voice heard and help select your VPA representatives for the next academic year. The VPA facilitates the professional and personal development of its members as well as provides postdocs a forum to communicate ideas and advocate for issues. I encourage you to get involved!

Save the Date: National Postdoc Appreciation Week September 19-23

National Postdoc Appreciation Week is a time to celebrate the successes and accomplishments of the postdoc community. There will be many activities throughout the week including our annual picnic. Keep an eye out for more information and a schedule of events.

Featured Event: Critical Conversations with Stacey Satchell

The Critical Conversations series was developed to speak to some of the most common and most difficult aspects of academic life for postdocs – progress and productivity and communication and conflict in academic relationships. These sessions give attendees the opportunity to learn about these topics and hear strategies – but most importantly to be a part of the conversation, sharing their experiences with each other combats the isolation that can be so prevalent in academic life. Be a part of the conversation! You can attend as many of the sessions as you wish (full series attendance not required). Size of the sessions is limited to allow for small group conversation.

Thursdays in July from 4 – 5 PM (July 7, 14, and 21)

The Vanderbilt Postdoc Association Executive Committee elections are now underway. Voting will end on July 20.

All current, active postdocs at Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center are eligible to vote including those classified as trainees and visiting postdocs.

16th Annual Vanderbilt Postdoc Symposium - Abstract Submissions Now Open

The 16th Annual Vanderbilt Postdoc Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, October 27th in the Student Life Center. Abstract submissions are now open for poster presentations and lightning round talks.

The symposium planning committee meetings take place monthly. To join, email postdoc@vanderbilt.edu.

Quarterly Estimated Tax Workshop for Postdoctoral Scholar, Trainees and Research Fellow Trainees

The purpose of the workshop is to help PhD trainees determine whether they are required to pay estimated tax in 2022—and if so, in what amount and when. Furthermore, it shows them how to financially prepare to pay their tax bill(s). It also addresses the common scenarios postdocs such as switching on to or off of fellowship mid-calendar year and being married to someone who has automatic income tax withholding.

This workshop is a series of self-paced modules with a live Q&A. The workshop is open through September when the Q3 estimated deadline payment is due.

This NPA workshop will be held on July 26 at 2 p.m. CST.

ISSS and GSS will be having a day-long workshop on Tuesday, October 4th looking at a variety of immigration topics. This workshop will take place via Zoom and will be recorded.

Nature Masterclasses are developed by Nature Research and provide professional development training for researchers by drawing on the expertise of Nature Research journal editors and experts. Faculty, staff, postdocs, and students of Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center are free to sign up at https://masterclasses.nature.com/.

Updated Health and Safety Protocols

Vanderbilt University will no longer require masking or physical distancing indoors. Individuals will have the option of wearing a mask indoors, including in classrooms, offices, labs, dining, and community spaces. The Vanderbilt Testing Center in the David Williams II Recreation and Wellness Center closed for the summer effective May 16th. For more information on University protocols, visit the Health and Wellness website.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center requires masking in all indoor public areas, both clinical and non-clinical for VUMC and VU faculty, staff, postdocs, and students. Other information on Covid-19 can be viewed on the VUMC Clinician and Employee Guidance website.

COVID-19 symptomatic testing for the Vanderbilt community is available at Occupational Health in Suite 112, Mondays - Fridays, 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., and at Vanderbilt Health Walk-In Clinics and Vanderbilt Health Clinics at Walgreens.

Free rapid antigen at-home kits are available.
For the VU Community, pickup at Sarratt 310 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on weekdays.
For the VUMC Community, pickup at Occupational Health, 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays.
