First Senior Center Grand Opening
On July 15, I was blown away by the grand opening of First Senior Center (FSC)’s new location in Norcross and its six-year anniversary celebration. First Senior Center is Georgia’s first senior daycare that is Vietnamese owned and operated. Founder Von Tran relocated the facility in response to its growth and increasing needs of the aging community and proudly hosted the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new 26,000-square foot facility to hundreds of attendees.
Event attendees congregated at the new location at Norcross Office Park, which is managed by Tom Hunter of Lavista Associates.

Dawson Boulevard Project Nears Completion The CID’s multi-year Dawson Boulevard sidewalk project is on track to be complete at the end of July. This project was built in three sections and extends approximately two miles from the DeKalb-Gwinnett County line to Jimmy Carter Boulevard. This new sidewalk along Dawson Boulevard connects the community’s existing apartment complexes to the nearest retail centers along Jimmy Carter Boulevard and provides residents with pedestrian access to local businesses, including places of employment. Our goals to improve access and mobility in the CID are being met with this key project.

Eagle Rock Distributing Donates Emergency Water to Big Canoe Fire Department Gateway85 CID member Eagle Rock Distributing, in conjunction with wholesale partner Anheuser-Busch, supplied a Georgia community with emergency drinking water as part of a larger program performed in partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC).
This July, Eagle Rock and Anheuser-Busch donated a total of 98 cases of water to the Big Canoe Fire Department. Each case contained 24 cans of water, equaling a donation of more than 2,000 cans to be used by the community’s local fire department and neighboring agencies.
Since 1988, Eagle Rock and Anheuser-Busch pause beer production to provide emergency drinking water and disaster relief supplies to local volunteer fire departments as part of the Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters Program. In total, their participation has totaled 8,000,000 cans distributed nationwide. Learn more about the Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters Program at www.nvfc.org/water.

Industry Spotlight - Logistics
Certain Logistics, which launched in 2020 and is located with the CID, specializes in logistics, warehousing, distribution, cross-docking, commercial services by ground, air, sea transport and more for domestic and international clients.
Gateway85 provides Certain with incredible access to I-85 and I-285.
"Our trucks take a few right turns and they’re in and out of our location, and there’s a variety of places for our drivers to eat. Our neighbors are kind and generous and best of all, we’re in an opportunity zone, which provides us with added benefits,” said Mary Fowler, Director of Certain Logistics.
Gateway85 CID has been actively compiling a comprehensive corridor study (I-285 Access Study) along Atlanta’s I-85 from I-285 north to I-985 to evaluate and recommend strategies for alleviating congestion.
If you need any logistics or delivery services, contact Fowler at 470.545.3454 or visit Certain Logistics. They are ‘certain’ to give you peace of mind.

Nonprofit Spotlight – Fresh Films and Rainbow Village
This month’s nonprofit spotlight highlights the collaborative nature of our local organizations and communities. This summer, Fresh Films mobilized onsite for multiple shoots in Atlanta and the surrounding area, including Rainbow Village, as part of its program to open doors for employment and economic mobility for underserved youth.
Fresh Films is a national organization that creates Emmy-nominated films, TV shows and documentaries while training underserved youth in all aspects of production and building critically important life skills alongside tech and storytelling skills. Fresh Films programs are designed to provide youth with college opportunities as well as careers in the entertainment industry and beyond.
One of Fresh Films’ current projects includes an interview with Rainbow Village’s Chief Executive Officer Melanie Conner as part of a larger series designed to introduce high school students to a wider range of career options. Gateway85’s Emory Morsberger joined the Fresh Films crew for an inside look at the program in action during its shoot on July 13.

Fresh Films has programs in multiple cities across the United States, including a Georgia-focused accelerator program that serves local high school populations including Berkmar High School and Meadowcreek High School.
Founded in 1991, Rainbow Village is the largest transitional housing nonprofit working to end homelessness through educational, support driven, compassionate programming that embraces unique paths and sustainable progress.
“The poverty rate for Gwinnett County has grown to 14% of the community and we have slightly over 2,000 homeless kids identified inside our school system,” said Randy Redner, Chief Strategy and Philanthropy Officer for Rainbow Village.
The Norcross neighborhood co-op sees 30,000 people a year in need of homelessness prevention initiatives within the Gateway85 CID area. The organization’s holistic approach to ending homelessness focuses on long-term solutions for individuals, but the organization is always mindful of ways to give back to the community and seek out new, innovative ways to provide pathways out of homelessness.
“We collaborate with other organizations whenever and however we can,” continued Redner. This program partnership with Fresh Films is one of many examples of Rainbow Village’s innovative and collaborative efforts to improve communities alongside other organizations.
Gateway85 helps support Rainbow Village’s mission by working to revitalize the economic environment to increase employment opportunities, as Rainbow Village works to improve homeless families’ financial outcomes. Both organizations aim to further develop an economically viable community.
Sponsorships for Rainbow Village’s 2023 fundraising event, We Are Family Benefit Gala, are available here. You can learn about other involvement opportunities here.
