Dear Cathedral Family,
Is baseball the perfect metaphor for Easter? Spring training for Lent? Opening Day and Easter Sunday? I say yes. Whether you are a baseball fanatic or not, I believe we all can agree that we are fans of springtime, warmer weather, and the beauty of the season. As I look out my window right now, there are two trees in full bloom, and the rest are still bare. So, we have a ways to go, but there is no doubt—spring is coming; Alleluia!
Something else there is no doubt about is the joy of the Easter season, which follows in stark contrast to the dreary days of Lent. This year, I was blessed to enhance my Lenten journey by visiting our old friend, Father Emmanuel, at the home base for the Congregation of Holy Cross in Rome. As you know, we recently received an extra generous gift from Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette that allows us to send groups of our Educators on spiritual pilgrimages to Rome and France each year. This year, our first group had "life-changing experiences" (their words, not mine!) in walking in the footsteps of the forefathers and foremothers of our faith, and we have the funding to continue this for at least four more years. Just a little over a week ago, I was able to go and scout out a new location for our Educators to stay during the upcoming fall trips, and I was twice blessed to have my wife, Marcia, and our school principal, Julie Barthel, join me. Thanks to Father Emmanuel's connections, we secured housing one block from the east wall of Vatican City! Knowing that our Cathedral Educators will be able to stay so close to all of the sights and spiritual blessings of the Vatican is a beautiful thing!
As we return to the Hill, it is truly spring and also the fourth quarter of our school year. As we strive to make each day of this quarter very memorable, especially for our seniors, we also begin to plan for next fall and the 2024-25 school year. It is mind-boggling to think that we are nearly through the first quarter of the 21st century! We are practically full in terms of enrollment for next year, with a large waiting list for incoming freshman class, and we know that greatness continues to call students and families to join us here at Cathedral. We also are continually working to make Cathedral a very desirable place to work. The aforementioned pilgrimages as well as our Irish Blessings Early Childhood Education center, reimbursed college classes for Educators, and of course being able to live out our Faith while 'on the clock' are among the many blessings for those who live their vocation here. Our culture, built on the love of the Gospel of the Risen Savior, Jesus Christ, provides a truly special student experience where greatness calls our students each day.
May the true and real joy of the Easter season be with you and your family, and may God continue to shower His blessings on our students and Educators. And, returning to our baseball metaphor, may we continue to drive in runs with doubles, triples, and homers and make the most of every day.
Alleluia, He is Risen. He is risen, indeed!
