CONHI Assistant Professor Dr. Jaquetta Reeves has been selected for a two-year virtual and in-person appointment as a Visiting Fellow in the Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars (REIDS) located at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA) in the Yale School of Public Health. She begins her appointment in June, when she travels to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut for a four week in-person intensive research training program.

“I am confident this experience will help me lead in the development of robust research programs at UTA,” said Dr. Reeves. “My mentors at REIDS, CIRA, and Yale will also guide my efforts in securing external funding for future research projects.”

Clinical Associate Professor Dr. Lynda Jarrell was named the Author of the Year by The Nurse Practitioner journal at their annual conference in April. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the journal's mission to meet the needs of the nurse practitioner (and other advanced practice nurses and clinicians) by providing practical, cutting edge clinical and professional information. This recognition comes as a result of the success of her February 2022 article Asthma-COPD overlap: The NPs role in diagnosis and management. Congrats Dr. Jarrell!

Earlier this Spring, kinesiology graduate students William Capell III (MS Exercise Science) and Alexis Gant (KINE doctoral student) presented their research at the South Central American Society of Biomechanics conference in Fort Worth at the UNTHSC. The society’s research evaluation committee awarded Alexis Gant the “Best Poster”, based upon the quality of her project and the enthusiasm she demonstrated in presenting her research. “I am very happy that I got to attend this conference. I enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to attend another one,”
said Gant.
Additionally, Will Capell gave an oral presentation on tibial compression and tibial shear in midfoot runners that generated a lively scientific discussion.

KXAN reported on how families cope with losing a mother from pregnancy. Kyrah Brown, assistant professor of public health, commented on a film, Birthing Justice, that examined the structures and systems that determine the mortality of Black women and their babies.

Kyrah Brown, researcher and assistant professor of kinesiology, spoke with NBC 5 about the public health crisis that has led to thousands of preventable deaths of Black women and babies. UT Arlington hosted its first Black Maternal and Reproductive Health Summit. Health care professionals, doulas, students and faculty from across North Texas participated in the series of week-long events to spark conversation about Black maternal health.

Kyrah Brown, researcher and assistant professor of kinesiology, spoke with the Fort Worth Report about the first commemorative Black Maternal Health Week in Tarrant County. The week-long event is aimed at raising awareness in attendees about solutions and means of empowerment to safeguard the pregnancy and childbirth of Black women.

The Shorthorn: School of Social Work and Smart Hospital commemorates opening with ribbon cutting ceremony. UTA and community members celebrate during the School of Social Work and Smart Hospital Ribbon Cutting on April 14 at the building’s courtyard. The building became operational at the start of the spring semester after two years of construction.
