Welcome to MSU!
We are excited to be your home for the next two years. MSU has a two-year live-on requirement to support your academic success — studies show students who live on campus for two years are more likely to graduate. Check out this video for more info on what you need to know!
Each one of our five neighborhoods provides you the opportunity to live, dine, study and find your own Spartan community. So, no matter where you live on-campus, you have access to resources to help you find success at MSU!
As an incoming student, you will indicate your housing and roommate preferences and then be assigned a room by the Housing Assignments Office.
When completing your housing preferences, it is important to keep in mind the hierarchy of assignment, meaning some preferences will outweigh others. Visit liveon.msu.edu/hierarchy-of-assignment to learn more.

Housing Assignment Process
-
You can sign your Housing Contract in your My Housing account, after you have made your Advanced Enrollment Deposit and set up your MSU NetID. This typically takes 2-3 business days after deposit.
- Housing Contracts must be signed no later than June 12.
-
We recommend completing it as soon as possible so you can complete your housing and roommate preferences before the deadline.
- If you're under 18, your parent/guardian must also sign the contract. You will have to provide their email address for them to sign.
- From May 15 through June 12, students will be able to indicate their housing preferences, which includes preferred roommates, bathroom style and dining plan selection.
-
If you do not meet this deadline, your preferences will not be able to be considered.
- Students who are a part of a Living-Learning Community may have specific program requirements — those will be honored prior to any indicated preference.
- Students will have the option to log into the My College Roomie app to match with potential roommates before they submit their housing and roommate preferences.
-
Depending on the size of the incoming class, MSU may need to utilize transitional housing for new students.
- There are limited housing exceptions for first-year students, which can be requested in My Housing.
- 2024-25 room and board rates were determined at the April 2024 Board of Trustees meeting.
-
MSU’s two-year live-on requirement ensures that students can focus on academics and community building in their first semester and not feel the pressure to search for next year’s housing.

Housing Preferences
Required preferences: You will be asked about your preferred bathroom style (suite or community style), your dining plan choice, and if you need honors housing. You can change your dining plan selection up until mid-August.
You will be able to request a specific roommate(s) through the Roommate Group form. Your selected roommate must accept the invitation in their My Housing account. If in an LLC, you must select a roommate within your same. Please see the LLC guidelines for more information.
If you do not have a chosen roommate, you will be assigned one at random. The housing preference form includes a list of questions to answer. These questions will help us match you with a roommate.

Housing Options
Gender-Inclusive Housing
We are pleased to offer gender-inclusive housing (GIH) to our new and returning students. GIH means that, in select spaces, students from all gender identities and expressions may choose to live together. Incoming students who would like to live in GIH will complete the Gender-Inclusive Housing Form in their My Housing account during the preference process.
Substance-Free Housing
Substance-free floors are spaces in which residents agree all forms of drugs and alcohol will not be brought into the area, even by persons 21 years of age or older. While MSU is already a drug-free campus, and most on-campus residents are not of age to drink alcohol, this housing option supports students who want to maintain a substance-free lifestyle. Substance-free housing is located in Abbot and Mason halls, near MSU's Collegiate Recovery Community. Incoming students who would like to live in Substance-Free Housing will complete the interest form in their My Housing account during the preference process.
Dietary Housing
Dietary Housing offers students with food allergies the option to reside in close proximity to Thrive Dining Hall. It's important to note that selecting Dietary Housing means you will be situated near Thrive, though not necessarily matched with an allergen-conscious roommate.

Living-Learning Communities
Students who are in a Residential College or Living-Learning Community (LLC) will be required to adhere to different roommate rules and housing placements. It is the student's responsibility to ensure their chosen roommate meets the LLC guidelines. When using My College Roomie, you will need to self-filter for students within your LLC.
Please visit the LLC Guidelines page for full details and information.
