FAQ of the Month
I'm taking stock of my current job and how it connects to future goals. What are some ways to position myself to move up in my organization or career field?

It's natural to think about next steps, whether that means climbing the ladder at your current organization, moving to a new company, or getting a grad degree to help you advance or switch gears. Sometimes the go-to trajectory is clear, but other times it's not so obvious. Here are 3 ways to research options:
  1. Assess the possibilities. What does 2018 hold in store for you? Schedule a chat with your supervisor and discuss the big picture. What are your goals for the year? How will you develop as a professional? How will you stay motivated and challenged?
  2. Gather information from trusted sources. Pick a few individuals you admire and ask to speak with them about what they love (and don't love!) about their jobs, as well as how they made the journey to their current positions.
  3. Look at "About Us" pages. Seriously! It may not sound super exciting, but looking at how organizations are structured can be quite illuminating when it comes to learning commonly used position titles and organizational hierarchy. Pick three organizations you like and go from there.
