Dear Colleagues and Retirees,
In our ongoing commitment to listening and supporting our people, we have spent the last several weeks carefully considering the feedback shared through our shared leadership partners and from many of you individually.
We have heard a clear and consistent message that for some retirees, the time required to navigate the marketplace and secure the right healthcare coverage is more significant than originally anticipated. After careful review, we have determined that we are able to offer a one-year extension for participation in the GVSU Retiree Medical Plan to those individuals who need more time to prepare for their transition to a new plan.
Key Details of the Optional Extension:
|
- Any retirees currently on the GVSU plan will have additional time to transition to a new medical insurance plan by January 1, 2028.
-
Current and active employees who were hired before January 1, 2014, and retire before December 31, 2026, are eligible to enroll in the GVSU Retiree Medical Plan for coverage through December 31, 2027.
- Effective January 1, 2027, the plan will be closed to new entrants and will terminate as of December 31, 2027.
-
Individuals electing to remain on the GVSU plan will pay the current rate for premiums through December 31, 2026, as we remain firm in our commitment that there will be no change to retiree medical plan rates for the 2026 plan year.
-
Between January 1, 2027, and January 1, 2028, individuals enrolled in the GVSU plan will be responsible for the full premium cost of the plan. Additional details will be communicated in October 2026, which aligns with the annual Open Enrollment period.

As the university navigates a healthcare environment marked by rising and unpredictable costs, we must continue to be responsible stewards of institutional resources.
We strongly encourage all retirees to take advantage of the resources available, including one-on-one support to help you explore marketplace options and identify the plan that best meets your needs.
We will continue to review and address the concerns shared by our community while also continuing to support the university’s long-term administrative and financial stability. Thank you for your continued dedication to Grand Valley.
Sincerely,
|
