Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome to summer! I hope you and your student are finding time to rest, relax, and visit with family and friends. Here at Tufts, things are a bit quieter on the Medford/Somerville and SMFA campuses, but we still have plenty of faculty and staff members hard at work preparing for Orientation and the 2019-20 academic year. We also have many Tufts students, as well as visiting undergraduates and pre-college students, participating in Summer at Tufts programs. I’m writing today to provide you with information about a few of the more than 250 courses being offered at Tufts this summer by the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. While the First and 12-Week Summer at Tufts Sessions are well underway, there is still time for your student to register for the Second Summer at Tufts Session, which runs July 2 through August 9.

Career Corner: Conversations with the Tufts Career Center

Summer Career Building Activities for Your Student

Alongside opportunities for rest and rejuvenation, the summer is a great time for students to reflect, research career paths, and refine self-marketing materials. Here are a few low-stress options:

Evaluate competencies and career readiness: Students can use these self-assessment tools to think about which competencies they’ve already developed through internships, civic engagement, academic courses/projects, research, and volunteering -- and which ones they’d like to strengthen. (Hint: Try using the Tufts Lynda Campus subscription for plenty of skill-building courses across a variety of subject areas.)
Conduct career conversations: If this sounds intimidating, we remind students that they’re simply brief chats with people whose careers sound interesting. Perhaps someone from the Tufts University Career Network on LinkedIn (or your personal network) would welcome a chat over coffee or a 20-minute phone call?
Refine the resume: We’re biased, but who doesn’t love a shiny new resume?! Better still, once your student has a draft, a Career Center advisor can review it and offer feedback -- in person, via phone or Skype/Webex.

What's Happening Academically?

Summer can be a good time for your students to hit the refresh button, to step back from their studies and reflect on the past year as well as future goals, and perhaps to explore more deliberately and directly a possible career interest. It is also a good time for you to review their transcript with them so that you are aware of their academic progress.

But some students do choose to study in the summer. If your student is home or elsewhere, not in Medford or the Fenway, there is a large variety of Tufts online courses offered in the summer. While the first Summer Session has begun, the second does not begin until July, which means there is still time to consider that option. Time is tighter if your student wants to take a class at a local college or university, since they will want to confirm in advance that the course will transfer to Tufts. Courses taught at bachelor’s degree-granting institutions in classrooms (not online) and for which your student earns at least a C- may be eligible. Log on to SIS and use the drop down menu under "Classes" to start the process for requesting a transfer credit.

2019-20 Health Insurance Waiver

The Health Insurance Waiver for the 2019-20 academic year is now available in SIS.

All Tufts students are required to have health insurance (it’s a Massachusetts state law). Accordingly, all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled half time or more are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance plan at Tufts. If, however, your student is covered by a separate policy through a U.S.-based insurance company that is comparable to the Student Health Insurance plan, they have the option of waiving their Student Health Insurance plan

The waiver process is required every year a student is enrolled at Tufts. If your student is covered by a separate health insurance policy for 2019-20 and would like to waive the Student Health Insurance plan, they can do so between June 1 and July 31:

Have your student visit their SIS account.
Have your student click on the Bills & Balances tab to access the Health Insurance Waiver.

Complete the Health Insurance Waiver on Behalf of Your Student

If you would like to complete the Health Insurance Waiver on your student's behalf, they will need to provide you with "invited viewer" access to their SIS account. For more information about this process, please visit the Registrar's Invited Viewer Access webpage.

We also recommend that your student take a picture of their insurance card (front and back) and keep it on their phone.
