Blue Lightning Initiative
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and educating the public about how to identify and prevent this crime.
This month, we're launching an ongoing partnership with the Blue Lightning Initiative (BLI) – a program led by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation – to help train PDX and Port of Portland employees to identify potential traffickers and human trafficking victims, and to report their suspicions to federal law enforcement.
Want to learn more and be entered to win $100? Head to the PDX People website to watch a 25-minute video on common indicators of trafficking that airport employees may encounter, and how to immediately report suspected trafficking to law enforcement. Once you've watched the training, you can enter to win a $100 gift card for helping keep PDX safe and secure (open through Wednesday, Jan. 31).

Travel Oregon Welcome Center Adds Hearing Accessibility Device
Baggage claim is a bustling area with lots of action, talking and other background noise. For travelers with hearing impairment, it can be difficult to hold a conversation in this environment. Recently, the Travel Oregon Welcome Center added Contacta 1 to 1 hearing loop at their counter to help alleviate these challenges. The loop creates a seamless communication experience for customers with hearing loss, enabling them to comfortably interact with staff at counters or during one-on-one interactions. Curious about how this technology works? Visit the Travel Oregon Welcome Center at baggage claim, where you can try it with testing headphones or, for those with hearing aids, experience the benefits firsthand.
Geraldo Calderon
Remembering Geraldo Calderon
It’s with a heavy heart that we’re sharing the news of PDX Volunteer Musician, Gerardo Calderon’s, passing. Many of you knew Gerardo, who had been at PDX as a member of our Volunteer Music program for 17 incredible years. Gerardo played Latin inspired music with a pan flute and guitar. Gerardo was in Mexico surrounded by friends and family at the time of his passing.

Can you believe we’re just four months away from the opening of the new main terminal!? Take a look at our to-do list, which will take us through May 2024.
While much of the work is happening behind walls, integration with daily airport operations is still key. In the bottom photos, Port of Porltand and Hoffman-Skanska colleagues reviewing plans to reactivate a component of the baggage handling system. Even relatively small changes take coordination and communication behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly and safely.
