Healthy Lifestyle Center of Muncie
The social work department is actively engaged with the Healthy Lifestyle Center (HLC) of Muncie. HLC is a community-based resource center focused on improving the health and well-being of individuals in our community and all services are free. With the impact of COVID-19, the HLC took to the Internet to improve our online presence. The master of social work graduate assistances were up to the challenge and worked diligently to provide live Zoom workshops, educational videos, healthy lifestyle tips, and a weekly newsletter.
We have a YouTube channel, Facebook, and website. If you would like to subscribe to the weekly newsletter, please contact hlc765@gmail.com or Dr. Kristin Trainor. COVID-19 might have changed how we operate, but it hasn’t stopped us from engaging our community, building relationships, and learning valuable skills.
Student Scholarships Awarded
In the Spring newsletter, we shared the recipients of our departmental scholarships. The Department of Social Work Scholarship Committee awarded 15 scholarships to social work students. This included over $7,000 in support. We wanted to share the impact these scholarships have had on our students. Enjoy the thank you letter from recent BSW graduate, Marla Summers. Read the letter.
Acknowledgment of Indigenous Populations
In recognition of indigenous peoples in Indiana, the United States, and around the world, the Department of Social Work will add the following land acknowledgement statement to the syllabus template starting this Fall semester:
We would like to recognize and acknowledge that Ball State University, and its state affiliates, occupy the ancestral lands of the Delaware, Miami, Potawatomi, and Shawnee people. Land acknowledgment is an important social justice practice that leads to indigenous visibility and a reminder that we live and work on forcibly settled land and that the colonization of indigenous peoples around the world is an ongoing process.

Congratulations to the BSW Summer Class of 2020
While we could not have a formal ceremony for our undergraduate program, we are thrilled to announce 20 new graduated change agents. These students successfully completed all of their degree requirements, including a variety of unique practicum arrangements. Students from this graduating class are attending graduate programs across the country (including the Ball State MSW Program) and entering the job market as essential workers.
We could not be prouder of these students. To honor their accomplishment, our faculty and staff celebrated them virtually during their final practicum seminar. Please enjoy the pictures that some of our BSW students wanted to share in their formal caps and gowns. A big shout out to our BSW field director, Professor Adrienne Newman, for her commitment to securing placements in a challenging time.

Congratulations to the MSW Summer Class of 2020
This Summer marked a milestone for the Department of Social Work. We graduated our first 15 students from the MSW Program.
The department hosted a special ceremony for these students at the Alumni Center on Friday, July 17. We live streamed the ceremony so family, friends, and field supervisors could share in each student’s success. Dressed in caps, gowns, and facemasks, these students entered the Ball State University history book.
Please enjoy the pictures that some of our MSW wanted to share. A big shout out to our MSW field director, Professor Shannon Staton, for her commitment to securing placements in a challenging time.

Aaron McBride
Aaron McBride earned his bachelor of social work at Ball State University in 2012. Since then, he fulfilled requirements to complete the Title-IV E Child Welfare Scholars Program by working with the Indiana Department of Child Services as a case manager. He was then accepted into the United States Peace Corp where he served in the Philippines combatting generational poverty among first generation scholars as a Youth Development Specialist. Once home, McBride transitioned to working in youth prevention services at a local nonprofit aimed at eliminating child sexual abuse and suicide. Currently, he serves as the Director of Prevention Services at Reach For Youth, where he leads prevention service strategy and manages relationships with community-based organizations-all with the goal of broadening access to mental health services as an alternative to youth being placed in the school to prison pipeline.
Through these roles, McBride has trained thousands of community members on prevention topics including child abuse and neglect, human trafficking, and school discipline reform. Outside of his professional roles, he serves as board secretary at Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center and is a block captain for Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. Academically, McBride has earned his Nonprofit Management Certificate through the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University and will receive his masters of public affairs in 2021. He also volunteers his time as a secretary of the board at Indianapolis Neighborhood Resources Center. He also serves as a volunteer for the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office as a community mediator with the James E. Waters Jr. Mediation Center.
