12/4/24 Basketball Memo

Girls’ basketball games have begun!  A number of great matchups have occurred throughout the state in advance to the start of the conference play.  The following will hopefully provide some clarification and information on a number of topics:

E-MAIL ADDRESSES: AD's, please make sure that your head girls' basketball coach has received this e-mail, and head girls' basketball coach, make sure your AD has received this e-mail.  Please send me the name of the Coach/AD who has not received this e-mail along with the name of the school they are with along with the e-mail they want me to enter into the database (be sure to update the directory in Bound).  Thanks to all of the head varsity  girls’ basketball coaches for viewing the Online Basketball Rules Meeting prior to the first competition.  Great job!

As noted below this year for posting of game video on the statewide HUDL pool:

·       The IGHSAU has asked schools to police themselves and for athletic directors and coaches to communicate with each other about “friendly” reminders that games are to be uploaded into HUDL by 10:00 am the following morning.  A reminder this is the first year and there will be some growing pains.  One thing that is important:  when listing the games in the HUDL pool be sure to list your school and not just Varsity Basketball – for schools to access the films, it is important to list your school.
·       For those of you that are new to the HUDL, consult with your head football coach or boys basketball coach as they have been using the HUDL feature for the statewide HUDL pool.

As many of you know, basketball participation numbers have declined in certain schools and in certain programs.  The IGHSAU is making that discussion a focus – because of that, the IGHSAU will be conducting a survey during the season to gather some information from schools.  Following that, the IGHSAU will develop a task force consisting to discuss this topic and develop some strategies locally and statewide to counter this concern in girls basketball.  Stay tuned!!

As you know the individual participation for the student/athlete has been as follows:  0-2 quarters in a day – counts as 0 games; 3-6 quarters in each day counts as one game, and seven or eight quarters of competition by an individual in a given day counts as two games.

MANY TIMES YOU HAVE A PLAYER THAT IS REALLY A JV PLAYER ONLY PLAY IN TWO QUARTERS DURING THE JV GAME BECAUSE YOU COULD POSSIBLY HAVE THAT PLAYER PLAY IN THE VARSITY GAME DUE TO FOUL TROUBLE.

ONE CHANGE WE ARE MAKING FOR THIS SEASON IS ALIGNING BASKETBALL WITH VOLLEYBALL FOR PARTICIPATION …

EACH ATHLETE IS ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN 21 GAMES AT EACH LEVEL – NO RESTRICTION EACH DAY.  THIS WILL ALLOW THOSE JV PLAYERS TO PLAY A FULL JV GAME AND THEN BE AVAILABLE FOR THE VARSITY GAME AS NEEDED!!

THE IGHSAU HAS RECEIVED POSITIVE FEEDBACK FOR THIS ADJUSTMENT IN QUARTER/GAME LIMITATIONS!

In the next several weeks, please complete the Site Availability Form in Bound if you wish to have your gym considered as a host site during regional tournament play.  Log into Bound with your username and password – click on the IGHSAU icon – go to Basketball – complete the site availability document.

Any questions, please contact me at gross@ighsau.org.  Have a great season!
