Memorial Day in Luxembourg

by Daniel Riecker, MUDEC Student Activities Coordinator
Any MUDEC student, past or present, can tell you that Luxembourg and the United States share many historical and cultural bonds. On May 29, this relationship was honored through the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm. The event was run by the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg and our three summer interns had the chance to participate. You can watch the full video of the ceremony here.
Sydney Pelley, a rising senior studying Biology and Neuroscience, recently had the occasion to visit her great-grandfather’s grave at the Cemetery. “It was very moving to see the Luxembourg and American flags that had been placed in front of my great-grandfather's grave for Memorial Day,” she said. “I was extremely honored to have the opportunity to talk to the people at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and hear more about my great-grandfather's experience during World War II.”

Field trip week continued on June 2 with a short hop just over the border to Trier, Germany. Students enjoyed exploring this surprising gem of a city. Known colloquially as the “Rome of the North,” the city’s rich and centuries-old history is represented through monuments like the 2000-year-old Roman gate and the birthplace of Karl Marx. And, of course, no trip to Germany is complete without pretzels!
