Holy Week, Flowers Needed, Formal Dress, SURVEY, Check-outs, and more

MARCH 31, 2021

It's Holy Week

Friday is a Half Day

Today's (Wednesday's) Chapel is the Palm Sunday service. Students will meet in Advisory and process to the Outdoor Altar.
The Maundy Thursday vigil is an opportunity for prayer and meditation between Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and Friday at 8 a.m. It is based on the vigil Jesus' disciples attempted to keep the night before his death. This tradition has been observed in St. Andrew's Chapel for over 100 years and was immortalized in James Agee's book, The Morning Watch. Boarding and day students, faculty, and staff are invited to sign-up to participate in person. Parents may drop in by Zoom

Flowers are needed for the Maundy Thursday vigil. Each year we decorate the chapel with as many flowers as we can for the overnight vigil. If you have flowers in your yard or you want to purchase flowers, please put them in the bucket at the side entrance to the chapel any time on Thursday, April 1.

Classes will dismiss at 11:20 a.m. for the required Good Friday service. Students will meet in Advisory and process to the Outdoor Altar. The service will begin at 11:25 a.m. Formal Dress is encouraged, but not required. There will be no afternoon classes or programs. Lunch will be served. School offices will close at noon. Buses will run at 12:30 p.m.
Mother Short will be taking a bus to the Easter Sunday service at Otey Memorial Parish in Sewanee for any boarders who wish to attend. The service begins at 11 a.m.

Our Easter chapel will be celebrated during our 1 p.m. service on Wednesday, April 7. Formal Dress is again encouraged, but not required.

Easter Weekend

Boarding families wishing to visit this weekend or bring their child home should contact Dean of Students Geoffrey Smith

We Want YOUR Feedback

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School’s goal is to have a daily schedule that offers students opportunities for challenge, balance, and joy. Please complete this survey to provide valuable feedback as we make adjustments to the daily schedule for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Weekends on Campus

Day students in grades 8-12 welcome

Day students in grades 8-12 are now allowed on campus on the weekends.
Fridays: 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM (Grades 8-9) to 10:00 PM (Grade 10) to 11:00 PM (Grades 11-12)
Saturdays: 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM (Grades 8-9) to 10:00 PM (Grade 10) to 11:00 PM (Grades 11-12)
Sundays: 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM or until 7:15 PM if attending Dean's Social and Compline
Day students must sign-in with the Teacher-in-Charge when they arrive on campus and sign-out when they depart. Day students wishing to eat meals on campus will need to sign-in for the meal and will be billed for those meals. Day students may not be in the residential houses and may not go on any van runs.

Boarding students may leave campus on Saturday and Sunday

As of this weekend, boarding students can check out from campus on Saturdays and Sundays to a specific destination. To check out, a boarding student must have driver and/or rider privileges set up in Boardingware.* Boarding students may check out for up to four hours, starting at 11:30 a.m., with a Teacher-in-Charge (TIC). Boarding students in grades 7 and 8 may only check out with an SAS family and only with approval of the Administrator-on-Call. All boarding students must return to campus and check in with the TIC by 10 p.m. on Saturday night and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Check-outs to specific destinations off the Mountain require a phone call between the parent and the TIC for both the driver and the rider; no blanket permissions are accepted. Students with unserved detention hours are ineligible to check out. Afternoon van runs will now be available to several destinations, including downtown Sewanee.

*Parents may update their student’s driver and rider privileges in Boardingware or may e-mail Academic Administrative Assistant Jana Barnett for assistance.

Change in COVID Testing Schedule

For next week only

Out of an abundance of caution and the assumption that there will be family gatherings this weekend for Easter, we are going to push testing back next week to allow for any incubation. All community members will test on Wednesday, April 7, or Thursday, April 8. Regular weekly testing will resume on Monday April 12. Students will not be required to quarantine prior to testing.

Vaccines for eligible boarding students

SAS is coordinating opportunities for boarding students who are eligible to receive COVID vaccines. Questions? Contact COVID Coordinator Dan Monahan.

Summer Opportunity

For students interested in race and leadership

“Tearing Down the Walls” is a two-day race and leadership conference (June 25-27) for independent school students in the Southeast. The conference trains students from diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds to become leaders and bridge builders. This summer's conference will be at Ensworth School in Nashville. SAS will send two faculty members and four students. There is no cost to participating students -  food, lodging, recreation, and the workshops will be covered by SAS. If your child is interested, please have them contact Director of Communications and Marketing Sherri Bergman.

Congratulations!
