Subject:   URGENT CLARIFICATION for State Reopening Plan and Laboratories
To:          UMass Amherst Faculty, Postdocs and Graduate Students,
Deans, Directors and Department Chairs, Business Manager
Cc:          Chancellor K. R. Subbaswamy, Provost John J. McCarthy,
Campus Leadership Council, Faculty Senate Rules Committee,
Research Council, Chairs of IRB, IACUC, Chemical, Biosafety, and
Radiation Safety Committees, Research & Engagement Staff

I write to clarify that Governor Baker’s announcement of the conditions for reopening of research laboratories after May 25, 2020 does not mean that our campus laboratories can open at that time.
The university must first certify that all of the Safety Standards for Laboratories are met.
The Research & Libraries Working Group announced yesterday that they are focused on the guidance and processes to meet this objective.
More details will be announced as they are available.
Sincerely,
Mike
