"I Am the Future" Campaign Launch
The “I Am the Future” campaign is created to showcase the diverse faces and voices of the students we serve. Similiar to the very popular “Humans of New York” book by Brandon Stanton, this campaign will focus on storytelling by bringing light to real lives from real people through photography and stories.
This campaign is on-going and is set to start in March 2017. Be sure to follow us on our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to stay up to date on this series!
Program Highlight:
FACES Sacramento
Our Sacramento FACES Health Scholars just started their first rotation of internships! This is the inaugural class for this program, which was established just this school year.
Their internship sites are local community organizations such as My Sister's House, Sacramento Peers on Prevention, Sacramento County Public Health Department, Food Literacy Center and Golden Pond Assisted Living Community and many more.
Preceptor Highlight:
Linda Aug, RN
“The value in having the FACES students on the nursing unit is a win-win. The students are given an invaluable opportunity to experience the front lines of healthcare in a REALITY setting prior to making it a career choice. I tell them this opportunity did not exist for many of us who have chosen healthcare professions with a more naive notion of the complexities of the job...
Alumni Highlight:
Soknay Lim
“My name is Soknay Lim. I am currently a fifth-year undergraduate student at San Francisco State University with a major in Health Education and a minor in Holistic Health.
I was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. When I was eleven years old, my family and I immigrated to San Francisco for better opportunities. As a first generation college student, I was anxious about the future. I was not confident about life after college, but FACES assured me that I will make..."
Samuel Merritt University Mentorship with FACES Hayward
FACES Hayward has partnered with Samuel Merritt University to bring mentorship for their senior students.  The mentors, students from the Master Physician Assistant Program at Samuel Merritt Univesity, are volunteering their time away from their studies to provide an extra layer of support for the seniors as they move towards high school graduation and potential careers in healthcare.
The mentorship consists of field trips once a month, as well as health workshops. The mentorship will continue until the health scholar's graduation from the program this May.

It's FACES Blue Coat Season!
FACES programs celebrate our Scholars' achievements by honoring them through ceremony and public recognition. One such important rite of passage that is celebrated in all FACES programs is our Blue Coat Ceremony. Modeled after the White Coat Ceremony that traditionally marks a student's transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences in many health professional programs, the FACES Blue Coat Ceremony celebrates our Scholars' successful completion of their preparatory curriculum and entry into their work-based learning internships.
Teachers, friends, family and program supporters join together to celebrate FACES Scholars as they are "coated" with their own individual lab coats emblemed with the FACES logo. Once coated, students come together to recite the FACES oath, acknowledging publicly a commitment to integrity, excellence, and service:
"I pledge to conduct myself in all matters,
As a FACES Health Scholar,
With integrity, care, commitment, and respect for others;
While dedicating myself to achieve my goals,
To lead the way, and to serve others."
Students look forward to this event because it represents the completion of their training and acknowledges the hard work they have put in. It also marks the start of their internships in the field, shadowing professionals in a real life setting and putting their training to work.

FACES Featured as "Best Practice"
by Greenlining Institute
“In a state where people of color make up over 60 percent of the population, people of color make up just 34 percent of physicians and 47 percent of registered nurses, and are underrepresented in other health fields as well. Boosting these numbers can help to assure culturally competent care while creating career pathways for disadvantaged young people.”
Thank you to The Greenlining Institute for featuring us! We appreciate the support as we continue to expand and work toward diversifying the health workforce. [Read the Brief]
