D-CHIPP Director's Note

D-CHIPP was recently invited to submit a video to the Association of Community Health Nurse Educators (ACHNE) pre-conference in regards to our response to two public health crises: the COVID-19 pandemic and structural racism. While some things are appearing better for us in the US as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are incredible disparities worldwide with infections and low access to vaccinations, particularly being highlighted by the situation in India. Here in the US, COVID-19 infections are still occurring, but the pandemic seems to be waning. More people are being vaccinated, restrictions are being lifted, and we can see the dim light at the end of the tunnel becoming brighter. The same is not true for structural racism. With the Chauvin verdict, a police officer is being held accountable for the murder of George Floyd, but the systems and structures that allow this have not changed. In the past week an unarmed Black man in Elizabeth City, NC was shot and killed while police were serving a warrant. The body camera video has yet to be released to the public.

In this issue, we highlight contributions from DUSON faculty and staff to identify and counter structural racism and health inequities. This is challenging work, and the change process will take time and effort. But, DUSON faculty, students, and staff are committed to long-term engagement and change. We are honored to be associated with organizations such as yours, who are also engaged in this work.
