Mongan Reflections from the Director: Radical Visions for Public Health
| |
Among the high points of our academic year at the Mongan Institute are our invited honorary lectureships. In October we had the extraordinary privilege of hosting Dr. Sandro Galea, Dean of the Boston University School of Public Health, for the annual David Blumenthal lectureship. Dr. Galea’s presentation, “Priorities for health in the post-Covid-19 era” provided an inspiring, yet sobering perspective on the challenges before us as the pandemic (hopefully) recedes. COVID-19 not only starkly magnified long-standing disparities in health and healthcare for racial and ethnic minorities, and low-income individuals in our nation and across the globe, but it also highlighted the tragic inadequacy of social, mental health, and substance abuse services in our nation’s healthcare delivery “system”. In addition to the disproportionate incidence, mortality, and life expectancy associated with COVID-19 in racial and ethnic minorities and vulnerable populations, the secondary effects of the pandemic on low-income workers, and on our physical and mental health will be with us for some time to come. Dr. Galea’s talk identified three key impediments to addressing these challenges (complexity of systems; our biases and privileged perspectives; and group think and absolutism) and three potential measures that will facilitate solutions (epistemic humility; radical compassion; and reform through reason). More on Dr. Galea’s in depth analysis and vision of priorities for the Post-COVID-19 era can be found in “We Need a Health New Deal” (US News and World Report); “A Radical Vision, An Incremental Approach to Achieving the Aspirations of Public Health” (Millbank Quarterly), and in his extraordinary and highly recommended recently published book, “The Contagion Next Time”.
Following the lecture, Dr. Galea met with some of Mongan Institute’s junior faculty and trainees and offered candid responses to an array of questions on research career development in a highly competitive, challenging, yet promising environment for health care delivery scientists interested in advancing health equity. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Galea as a friend to the Mongan Institute, and are grateful to Dr. David Blumenthal for his support and participation in this annual event. As highlighted in this November Updates from the Mongan Institute, we are also thrilled to announce this year’s Honorary Ernest M. Haddad Lectureship on December 9th by Joel Teitelbaum, J.D., LL.M, Professor of Public Health and Law at George Washington University. Professor Teitelbaum will deliver a virtual lecture titled “Striving for Health Justice: History, Law, and Structural Change” providing both a historical overview and legal perspective on health disparities, health justice, and his unique “radical vision” for health care reform. We hope that you will join us for this exciting annual event! Finally, with the holiday season rapidly approaching, I sincerely hope that we can all take much needed time away from the demands and stresses of work to relax, and to spend time with family, loved ones, and friends. Best wishes for the coming holiday season!

Joel Teitelbaum, J.D., LL.M, Presenting the Annual Ernest M. Haddad Honorary Lecture
| |
The Mongan Institute is pleased to announce that Joel Teitelbaum, J.D., LL.M, will be presenting the annual Ernest M. Haddad Honorary Lecture, “Striving for Health Justice: History, Law, and Structural Change”, at Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday, December 9th, 2021, from 8-9 am virtually via the MGH Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. Please click the audience live stream link- MGH Medical Grand Rounds - Live Streaming (partners.org) to view the Haddad lecture.
Please note this event is for MGH employees only.
The annual Haddad Lecture was created in 2002 by Massachusetts General Hospital to honor Ernest M. Haddad who served as the Secretary and General Counsel of the MGH for 21 years and became the founding General Counsel of Partners HealthCare (now MGB) in 1994. During his tenure, Haddad created a full-service law department that provided comprehensive legal services to the MGH and the entire Partners system and was widely recognized for its excellence throughout the legal and healthcare communities. Joel Teitelbaum, J.D., LL.M., is a Professor of public health and law at George Washington University. He serves as co-Director of the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership and as Director of GW’s Hirsh Health Law and Policy Program, which fosters an interdisciplinary approach to the study of health law, health policy, health care, and public health. For 11 years he served as Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs in the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management. During President Obama’s second term, Professor Teitelbaum became the first lawyer named to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives (a.k.a. “Healthy People”), the national agenda aimed at improving the health of all Americans over a 10-year span. Professor Teitelbaum’s teaching and research focus on the various intersections among health law, civil rights, population health, health disparities, and social/economic/political determinants of health.
