Spring Term Registration Opens |
Our fresh new spring brochure is hot off the press, featuring 116 classes starting in mid-March. And 44 of those classes are brand new topics! We will welcome four instructors new to our program. Read their bios below. Our beautiful Sandy Center will host eight classes this term and we remain approximately 70% in person and 30% on Zoom. Continuing to learn has never been easier! But decisions about what to take can be challenging. So, join us at our annual Spring Fling to meet instructors, learn more about their upcoming classes, experience wonderful docent-led tours, and enjoy a light lunch buffet at the beautiful Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Bruce L Maw became enthused about a career as a landscape architect after completing a botany class as a prerequisite for entrance into pharmaceutical school and subsequent to concluding numerous courses in art and graphic design. He is a licensed landscape architect, a former member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and a 1981 Utah State University graduate in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. He has worked in all aspects of the profession of landscape architecture, including residential and urban/recreational park design, large-scale planning, and public facilitation, and provided design services in campus and institutional planning to Brigham Young University for 25 years as the campus landscape architect in Physical Facilities. Bruce also ran a residential landscape design business in the evenings and weekends for all those years in Utah County, thus, improving the beautification of the area “one residence at a time”.

Bruce has served as an officer in various capacities within the Utah chapter of ASLA, editor of the chapter newsletter, on the Provo City Parks and Urban Forestry Board, and served on the Utah State University LAEP Advisory Board. He also volunteered for six years on the Hidden Garden Tour committee and assisted in the selection and hosting of gardens. In September 2005, BYU won top honors in the University Campus category from America in Bloom, a nonprofit organization dedicated to “Planting Pride in Our Communities.” Landscape architecture has allowed Bruce to combine his interest in plants and design, while providing a rewarding service to a diversity of users within the community.

Paul Ford started writing poetry in the fall of 2007, then joined the Utah State Poetry Society (UTSPS) in early 2008. Paul has taken on many volunteer roles in UTSPS, including president (2021-2022). Similarly, Paul has volunteered for the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and served as president (2022-2024). A love of poets and poetry underpins Paul’s journey shared with poet friends in Utah and across the country.

Isabelle works as a conservation intern at the Church History Museum. She graduated from the University of Utah with a major in History and minors in Art History, Asian Studies, and Book Arts. Next year, Isabelle plans to attend a master’s Program in Conservation Studies. When she is not working in the lab, Isabelle enjoys travelling, attending concerts, and drinking a good cup of herbal tea.

Benedicte is a curator of historic sites, visitor centers, and exhibits. She obtained her undergraduate degrees in History and English from the University of Utah. During her time at the U, she spent several years as the Head Editor of the Canticle Literary Magazine. After undergrad, she moved to Scotland where she attended the University of Edinburgh. There she obtained an MScR in Collections and Curating Practices. In her spare time, you can find Benedicte reading and travelling.

We are pleased to offer 21 new Zoom courses through our esteemed partnership with Osher Online™ with Northwestern University. This special program allows members from over 50 of the other 124 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the country to participate in shared online courses, thanks to the generosity of The Bernard Osher Foundation. Osher Online™ allows Osher members from different states and institutions to learn with and connect to each other while maintaining membership at their own local Institutes. Muscle strength and balance are critical to maintaining health and independence as we age. Vivo exercise sessions consist of cognitive, balance, and strength exercises informed by the latest science and research on exercise for older adults. Certified personal trainers provide modified exercises to meet each student's fitness needs. Whether you are new to exercise or exercise regularly, Vivo will help you build your strength and improve your fitness and mobility. Classes meet once a week for 45 minutes. For best results, sign up for two class sessions per week and choose which days best suit your individual time preference and schedule.

The Booker Bookers will read Booker Prize winners in monthly meetings from September 2025 through May 2026. Each session will feature a rotating discussion leader from among Osher members. The reading list is curated by Osher volunteer Lee Ann Troutman, featuring titles available at both the Anderson Foothill branch of the city library system and the Granite County Library. Join us for a fun Spring Fling at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on the University of Utah campus. From 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, we will host instructor previews of our upcoming spring term courses. You can meet and greet instructors and ask questions about their class content. At 12:00 pm, we will offer docent tours of the museum galleries and exhibitions. From 1:00 to 2:00 pm, lunch will be served in the museum's Great Hall under Japanese artist Onishi Yasuaki's spectacular Stone on Boundary installation. Free parking will be included, and main campus will be on spring break so getting to the UMFA and parking there will not be an issue. Help us celebrate the early beginnings of spring and the launch of our new term!

Call for Submissions – Osher Reflections
Attention Osher Members! We are excited to announce that the 2nd Edition of Osher Reflections, our new literary and art publication, is now in the planning stage, to be available by December 2026. We are soliciting 22 stories and poetry for this edition. The selection of these stories/poetry will be done by a juried panel of five Osher members including Holly Webster, the editor. Guidelines for writing these submissions can be obtained by email: hollyfw@gmail.com .
We know there are many people in our Osher community with intriguing stories, and we look forward to reading them! We are hopeful for very modest donations to help publish this project, but it is not obligatory for submission of your writing. Donations can be made through the Osher website.

The NOVA Chamber Music Series celebrates the vast chamber music repertoire and Utah’s resident artists through concerts, commissions of new works, educational programs, and recordings. Upcoming concerts include Recuerdos Musicales, Spanish, Cuban, and Mexican music by Ponce, Curbelo, Granados, Brouwer, and Cassadó on March 8 and Romani Rock, music of Enescu, Ravel, Janáček, and a world premiere by Igor Iachimciuc on April 19. Performances are held at Libby Gardener Concert Hall in Presidents’ Circle.

The Topaz Museum announces their 2026 pilgrimage which will pay tribute to the 11,212 people of Japanese descent who were incarcerated at the Topaz WWII American concentration camp. This event gives participants the opportunity to explore the legacy of Topaz as well as the Japanese American history in Salt Lake City and Utah. They will offer intergenerational programming, including activities at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple and walking tours of historic Japantown and other local interests. On Saturday May 2nd, bus transportation will take participants from Salt Lake City to Delta for a day trip to the Topaz Museum and the historic Topaz site.

Utah's National History Day
|
Volunteer judges are needed for the Utah Historical Society’s March and April History Day contests. Working with the theme Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History, young historians are investigating moments of change in local, national, and world history. Please help us give them a great learning experience by volunteering as a judge. Contests are held statewide, so find an opportunity near you! As a volunteer judge, you will assess projects, interview the students, and provide helpful feedback on their work. No prior judging experience is necessary.
