SMPA SUMMER RUNDOWN

Please join us for our annual SMPA Kickoff Event on Thursday, September 3, at 6 pm via Zoom. This is an annual gathering that brings us together to say hello, launch the year, and pass along vital information about SMPA-exclusive scholarships and prizes, University updates, internships, and job opportunities, and upcoming events. Students will hear from some of our fabulous faculty members and alumni who are leaders in media and politics.

JOB AT MIGRATION POLICY INSTITUTE 
The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan think tank dedicated to the study of migration policies in the United States and around the world, seeks a motivated and energetic Communications Coordinator. 
Applications are due by close of business on August 31, 2020

JOB AT FREEDOM HOUSE
Freedom House is a U.S.-based, U.S. government-funded non-profit non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights. They are seeking a Program Associate who will provide support for various aspects of implementation of the assigned regional portfolio, including research, reporting, new project development and logistical, administrative, and financial matters.

INTERNSHIP AT RANDLE COMMUNICATIONS 
Randle Communications (Randle) is accepting applications from highly motivated college students (graduating December 2020) and recent graduates seeking an opportunity to accelerate their career as a full-time, paid digital intern in one of Sacramento’s top public affairs and public relations firms. A former SMPA student passed along this amazing opportunity and encourages students to apply. 

JOBS AT MIDDLE SEAT 
Middle Seat is a progressive communications firm that does work for various causes and candidates. 
Middle Seat is looking for a Digital Coordinator who will work on a team running email programs for progressive candidates, political committees, and nonprofits. This job is an opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of communicating with mass email lists to raise money and recruit volunteers. 
Middle Seat is also looking for a Digital Strategist who will run email programs for progressive candidates, political committees, and nonprofits. Email marketing is a growing and in-demand field in the world of progressive politics. 

INTERNSHIP AT SHIRLEY & MCVICKER PUBLIC AFFAIRS  
Shirley & McVicker Public Affairs is a cutting edge conservative political firm looking to hire interns and Account Executives. Interns will be doing research, data analysis, and managing social media accounts. This is a paid internship.

INTERNSHIP AT CNN 
CNN is looking for a Fall 2020 Virtual Intern at the CNN International Desk. CNN international interns will get an opportunity to view the inner workings of one of the leading news networks in the world. Journalists cover a wide range of subjects including terrorism, politics, business, social issues, and trends. This is a great opportunity to experience, learn, and be exposed to the newsgathering cycle.

A LIVESTREAM EVENT WITH DR. ANTHONY FAUCI
This past Wednesday, the School of Media and Public Affairs and the Milken Institute School of Public Health hosted a special live edition of "Healthy You: Surviving a Pandemic" with Dr. Anthony FauciDirector of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. 
After the discussion with DrFauci, Frank Sesno moderated a conversation with Silvio Waisbord, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs, Lynn Goldman, Dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health, and Barbara L. Bass, Vice President for Health Affairs, Dean of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and CEO of the GW Medical Faculty Associates around leading and communicating in times of crisis.

SPOTLIGHT

Imani Cheers was quoted in the WJLA-ABC7 article 7 On Your Side hosts town hall to highlight past and upcoming Commitment March. She was also on CTV News Video Network talking about President Trump's attacks on Kamala Harris.
Peter Loge was quoted in Scripps Media in the article Campaign 2020: Can virtual political conventions impact voters? His book Political Communication Ethics: Theory and Practice was also newly released this week. Chapter authors include SMPA alumni Andrew Lautz, Rachel Wallace, and Kip Wainscott.
 
GW'S RESPONSE TO COVID-19
