TVMA Repurposes its Foundation
The former Tennessee Human-Animal Bond Foundation is now the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Foundation.  Continuing its support of the advancement of relationships between man and animals, the TVMF will also be able to provide support for veterinary institutions and organizations through programs such as scholarships, educational programs, research programs, programs focused on animal welfare, and programs encouraging the advancement of veterinary science or other animal related fields as a profession.  TVMF Chairman Frankie Locklar has made the first donation in memory of Dr. John Donaldson.  You, too, can support TVMF's efforts by making a contribution in memory of or in honor of a special person or animal.  Click here for more information.

Regulations for Animal Exports
Accredited veterinarians are responsible for being knowledgeable of the regulatory requirements of each country.  You may consult the International Animal Export Regulations website located at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals prior to issuing international health certificates. Do not rely on information or certificates your clients bring to your office.  The National Import Export Services office of USDA APHIS has resources that can expedite the export certification process, such as a variety of fillable forms that could be completed by using your word processor and a training manual which can be used to train your office staff regarding the exporting process.  Click here for documents which provide guidance for you and your clients.  Please note:  Although the form refers to Florida, the information is correct for Tennessee as well.
Licensing Board Tidbit
TVMA wants to remind everyone to review the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners Rule 1730-02-.16 Hospitalization.  When this rule was adopted, the Board had a lengthy discussion about the language in the first paragraph.  (1) Inpatients shall be examined at least once a day by facility personnel.
The TVMA representative at the Board meeting asked for two points of clarification.  First, did the term "inpatients" refer to animals hospitalized for an illness or treatment or did it apply to animals merely boarding at the facility?  The Board decided that it referred to any animal being kept at the facility.  The second question was did the term "facility personnel" mean that it had to be a veterinarian checking on the animals even on weekends and holidays or could it be any employee?  The Board said that it was to be the veterinarian.
To further clarify, TVMA asked if a veterinarian was required to physically come to the facility on a holiday and check on the animals, even if the only animals present were healthy boarders.  The Board answered yes.
