According to the USAID 2023-2030 Global TB Strategy, “There is increasing evidence suggesting that climate change impacts every aspect of life including TB epidemiology, since there are clear indications that climate change affects a number of socioeconomic determinants.” The strategy goes on to acknowledge the need for further research on the impact of changes in climate on TB, while “identifying the need to anticipate the immediate impacts of extreme weather events on TB activities, incorporating interventions to facilitate TB service continuation during times of crisis, and working with national TB programs to incorporate interventions into national TB strategic plans.”

TB DIAH has collated a collection of recent research on the impact of climate change on infectious diseases, including TB. A selection of these articles can be found below, as well as in TB DIAH’s Resource Library.

The TBCI for Frontline Workers online course presents essential information about TBCI needed by frontline healthcare providers, public health staff, and community health workers to implement TBCI programs. The course is now available in French, Portuguese, and English at https://training.tbdiah.org. A Russian translation is coming soon.

Missed Our Webinar on the Center of Excellence (COE) in TB M&E and Surveillance for Eastern Europe and Eurasia?

TB DIAH’s webinar on the COE in TB M&E and Surveillance for Eastern Europe and Eurasia was held on March 20. Experts from USAID/Washington, WHO/Europe, and Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) and National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NCTLD) shared their perspectives on this important effort and answered questions from participants. The webinar recording is available here in both Russian and English.

World TB Day 2023

On March 24, Alexander Asatiani, TB DIAH’s Senior Regional Consultant for Eastern Europe and Eurasia, presented at a World TB Day event in Tbilisi, Georgia, hosted by Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC). Asatiani spoke about the TB DIAH project and the Center of Excellence model to an interested audience of Georgian TB providers, policy makers, donors, and other key TB stakeholders.

For TB DIAH’s World TB Day 2023 social media campaign, we asked our staff how indicators in the Performance-based Monitoring & Evaluation Framework can help to #endTB. Our Senior M&E Technical Advisor, Tariq Azim, said: “The PBMEF indicator on the percent of bacteriologically confirmed TB cases measures a program's capacity to detect TB accurately and rapidly using WHO-approved diagnostics to increase the percentage of TB cases confirmed bacteriologically. At a macro level, these indicators can help the policy and planning decisions to improve information traffic across service providers and diagnostic facilities. Additional micro-level factors may include the availability of instruments and consumables, samples transportation network, and more.”
