NYU Shanghai Celebrates the Class of 2023's Graduation

On Monday, May 22, NYU Shanghai's Class of 2023 walked across the stage at the Oriental Arts Center in the University's seventh commencement ceremony. 397 graduating seniors (including six study away students from the New York campus) hailing from 36 countries, including 223 Chinese students from 23 provinces across China, received bachelor's degrees from NYU and diplomas from NYU Shanghai.

Words of Wisdom for the Class of 2023

Student representatives William Matthew Dreesen '23 and Rachel Sun Yunzhe '23 addressed the Class of 2023 and shared their stories of personal growth over the past four years. Chancellor Tong Shijun, Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman, Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen, and NYU President Andrew Hamilton shared their good wishes for the graduating class. Ambassador Cui Tiankai served as Commencement Speaker and spoke on the value of cross-cultural understanding.

Meet the Class of 2023

Six members of the Class of 2023, Ariana Alvarez '23, Dennis Hu Shiyi '23, Adib El Ounani '23, Kerry Zhang Yaqi '23, Sharon Zhao Hanyu '23, and Carter Christiansen '23, spoke about their journeys, what brought them to NYU Shanghai, how their time at NYU Shanghai changed them, and their post-graduation plans.

NYU Shanghai Class of 2023 Reception in New York

Over 80 NYU Shanghai graduates participated in NYU’s All-University Commencement ceremony. A reception was held there for NYU Shanghai graduates in New York.

Senior Awards Ceremony 2023

At the NYU Shanghai Senior Awards Ceremony, NYU Shanghai leadership conferred outstanding graduates with academic honors, including the NYU Shanghai Excellence Award, Global Leadership Certificate, Latin Honors and Provost's Award.

Scholarship Winners from the Class of 2023

Congratulations to Jacky Huang '23 on being named an Erasmus Mundus Scholar and Samuel Boghossian '23 and Declan Mazur '23 for being awarded places in the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program. NYU Shanghai alumna Mahder Takele Teshome '22 was named a Knight-Hennessy Scholar.

Class of 2023: What A Difference Four Years Makes

From their first year and on to graduation, the members of the Class of 2023 have courageously risen above challenges and setbacks to make it to Commencement Day. We caught up with Abigail Clark '23, Declan Mazur '23, Zhang Yueyang '23, Zineb Dardafaa '23, and Camila Matamoros ’23 to see how their NYU Shanghai experiences have shaped them into who they are today.

The Lighting of the Pearl Tower

On Sunday, May 21, members of the Class of 2023 met at Shanghai's iconic Pearl Tower at dusk. Decked out in their purple graduation gowns, the class gathered below the tower and counted down to 7 pm, when the tower lit up in purple in honor of NYU Shanghai.
