NEWS FROM THE NINTH WARD
MAYDAY!
In the Heart of the Beast's Mayday Parade is Sunday, May 3, 2015. Make a donation and we'll see you in the Park!
I hope you can join me and the other members of the Minneapolis delegation to the Project for Public Spaces Public Markets Conference as we share reflections from our recent trip. This installment will focus on strategizing with these community experts on how to bring a strong Public Markets blueprint to Minneapolis, as a vehicle for spurring economic development, activating the public realm, and nurturing entrepreneurship in our communities.
Joining us for the conversation will be panelists Shaina Brassard, Director of the West Broadway Business Coalition, DeVon Nolen, manager of the West Broadway Farmer's Market and member of Homegrown Minneapolis's Food Council, and Coal Dorius, adjunct professor and artist with Juxtaposition Arts

We will meet at the Ninth Ward's own Midtown Global Market for a lively conversation over the breakfast hour. Come a little early to grab breakfast at La Loma or Andy's Garage, coffee from Mapps, or a pastry from the celebrated Salty Tart.

MINIMUM WAGE AND WORKING FAMILIES AGENDA
Following closely on the heels of last week's nationwide action demanding $15 and a Union, last Friday the Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to establish a work group that will design a study on a citywide and regional minimum wage hike and develop policy recommendations for mandating paid sick and safe time, fair scheduling, and protection against wage theft for Minneapolis workers.
This victory would not have been possible without the leadership of low-wage workers and hardworking organizers, especially those with 15 Now, NOC and CTUL. I look forward to continued work together with these and other partners. Look out for oppotrtunities to plug in.

MIDTOWN FARMERS MARKET OPENING DAY FOOD TRUCK FEST MAY 2
Spring is here and with it, the beginning of the Midtown Farmers Market season!  Come check out the Opening Day Food Truck Fest at the market to taste some of the first fresh produce of the year, and graze through the delicious offerings of some of the Twin Cities’ best food trucks. The Market runs Tuesday afternoons and Saturday morning throughout the summer.
Location of the Market
The market is located at the southwest corner of the intersection of East Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue, at 2225 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. This year, to accommodate construction of Hennepin County’s Family Service Center along with Phase 1 of the L&H Station development, the market will be operating just around the corner from where it has previously been (see image above). A Public Plaza to accommodate the Midtown Farmers Market and other public activities will be built during Phase 2.

BIKE LANES AND ROAD UPGRADES COMING TO THE NINTH WARD
In a sign that Spring is truly on its way, we have a busy construction season planned in the Ninth Ward. Projects include resurfacing on 26th and 28th Streets, 31st Street, and many streets in the Central Neighborhood. I am so pleased that both the 31st Street and 26th/28th Street projects will also be added to our growing network of bike lanes-- and the bike lanes on 26th and 28th street will be protected, like the photo above, which will make it easier for people to commute by bike and calm traffic on these busy streets. Bike lanes will also be added on Chicago Avenue south of Lake Street. Please check out all the links for more information, including public hearings, and contact our office if you have any further questions or comments.
CURBSIDE ORGANICS COMPOSTING

NINTH WARD 'BEST OF THE TWIN CITIES' WINNERS!
The Ninth Ward got a lot of love in the City Pages' annual Best of the Twin Cities last week. Among many other gems, you can find the Twin Citues' best tacos at Taqueria Los Ocampo, best distilled liquor at DuNord, best place to buy local at the Midtown Global Market, best vegetarian eats at the Modern Times, and the city's best urban farm, Stones Throw. And yes, the Shit Biscuit, winner of the best venue name, is located in the Ninth Ward. No, I'm afraid I can't tell you where it is either.
