Back to Basics
Logger women’s basketball head coach Casey Kushiyama grew up with a deep love of basketball, idolizing players like Magic Johnson, Penny Hardaway, and Michael Jordan. Born and raised in Hawai`i, he moved to the Pacific Northwest to attend conference opponent Linfield University, where he met his wife, Puget Sound track and field head coach Lisa Kushiyama. For the Kushiyamas, Logger athletics is a family affair and before the pandemic, they would often host team dinners at their house. Kushiyama loves the relationships he’s able to build with his players and has appreciated the chance this year to focus on teaching the fundamentals—even if that means using inflatable dummies when running drills to maintain physical distancing. With the team primarily composed of sophomores and juniors, he’s excited to see how they’ll grow in the years to come. At home, Kushiyama enjoys playing volleyball and helping his two sons navigate online school.
