Meet Mushawn Knowles ’20
ASUPS President Mushawn Knowles ’20 hopes to work alongside the campus and Tacoma communities “to curate a more ethical, accessible, reciprocal, safe, inclusive, equitable, and just campus community.” As a sociology and anthropology major, they plan to continue working at the grassroots level for social, racial, and economic justice. In their spare time, Mushawn enjoys writing poetry, making music, and spending time farming and near the water.

HACKS & CHOPS With support from The Mellon Foundation, Hispanic studies professor Brendan Lanctot will spend this academic year as a Burkhardt Fellow in University of Washington’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies and the Simpson Center for the Humanities. He’s studying the ways visual technologies helped form and inform communities in Latin America during the 19th century, and how that process may have influenced what we’ve come to refer to as “populism.”

Loggers Love Tacoma
In 1997, Washington’s original area code, 206, was split to accommodate population growth, and area code 253 was created for Tacoma and the South Sound. Since then, locals have taken great pride in celebrating being part of “the 253.” In line with that tradition we take advantage of the 253rd day of the year—253 Day—to share how proud we are to call Tacoma home.

His certification came after a rigorous training program to learn airspace regulations, operating requirements, and safety procedures to ensure compliance with the FAA’s Small Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Rule and campus drone policies.
