RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

DRI researchers identify cancer-causing chemicals in exhaled breath of e-cigarette users
A team of researchers led by Vera Samburova, Ph.D., associate research professor, has found that significant amounts of cancer-causing chemicals such as formaldehyde are absorbed by the respiratory tract during a typical vaping session, underscoring the potential health risks posed by e-cigarettes.
Vera Samburova works in the Organic Analytical Lab at DRI's Reno campus.

New research shows that low-severity wildfires impact soils more than previously believed
According to two new studies conducted by DRI's Markus Berli, Ph.D., associate research professor, and colleagues at the University of California, Merced, low-severity burnsin which fire moves quickly and soil temperature does not exceed 250°C (482°F)cause damage to soil structure and organic matter in ways that are not immediately apparent after a fire.
Burned and non-burned areas from the Carpenter Fire on Mt. Charleston.

BEHIND THE SCIENCE

Meet Nina Oakley, Ph.D., Assistant Research Scientist and Regional Climatologist at the Western Regional Climate Center
Nina specializes in the study of atmospheric conditions that lead to extreme landscape events such as debris flows, landslides, flooding, and avalanches. She has been a member of the DRI community since 2011, when she moved to Reno to begin her graduate program at the University of Nevada, Reno. In her free time, Nina enjoys surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, snowboarding, mountain biking, and cooking.
Nina Oakley Oakley examines conditions following the Soberanes Fire in Northern California, which occurred during summer and early fall of 2016.
