Middle School Musical: SEUSSICAL JR.

Please join our Middle School Musical Class
as they tell Seuss stories with songs and sass.
A small boy discovers a tall striped hat,
that truly belongs to that infamous Cat
The journey extends to the Jungle of Nool
with shenanigans from Horton and the sour Kangarool
And don't forget Gertrude, as most people do,
the amazing Mayzie, and the rest of the crew,
as Horton tries to save that Family of Who.

Come see this cast, as they have a blast,
enjoy Seussical rhymes and jolly fun times.
How much, ask ye? Yippee, it's free!

Performances in Prep's Driscoll Auditorium:
Friday, May 15th at 7:00 pm
Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 pm
UPCOMING EVENTS

Visiting Literary England

Come one! Come all! To the literary event of the season! On Tuesday, May 19th, at 7 pm, the 10th grade English classes will be presenting the fruits of their labors at the Visit Literary England celebration in the Commons. Past gatherings have featured such notables as William Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and George Orwell. The guest list for the upcoming soireé promises to be just as illustrious, although one never knows when such dubious characters as Dracula, Long John Silver, or Offred the handmaiden might make an appearance.

Please join us for some light refreshment and stimulating conversation. And have your questions ready. What do you really want to know about Charles Dickens, or James Bond, for that matter? See you there!

PREP ROCKS!

Please join us for Prep Rocks! on Wednesday, May 20th at 7:00 pm in our Driscoll Auditorium. Fresh off their stellar performance at the ISAS Arts Festival in Ft. Worth, the Prep Jazz/Rock Ensemble will perform short sets, with a special surprise from the Techno Music Class. Also featured will be our jamming So You Wanna Be a Rock Star Middle School Bands. A perfect way to end a wonderful music-filled school year!

THINK AHEAD CHESS CAMP AT PREP

There is a lot of enthusiasm surrounding the Prep Chess Club. Following an exciting tournament in the Prep gym last semester in which over 120 students from all over the state participated, the team went on to compete at a tournament in Española and a Regional Qualifier at the Santa Fe Indian School. These events have prompted us to offer a chess camp that Prep will host at the Meem this summer. The camp is open to ANY Santa Fe area students from 1st to 12th grade (classes split up by age and ranking.) Dynamic classes will be taught by renowned NYC chess coach Alanna Katz the week of June 22-26. There is a full-day option, or half-day option for either the morning or afternoon.

More information can be found here, where you will also find an online registration form, or by contacting our chess coach, Joey Reich at jreich@sfprep.org
CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Generating Impact: Where We Are And What's Next

The school year is coming to a close, leaving two very important priorities of our capital campaign that need to be funded by June:  Our Sustaining Fund, which makes the connection between the outstanding education we offer and the people and programs that make that education possible, and our Classroom Renovation Project.

As soon as students are released to their summer adventures, construction crews will move into Prep and the demolition of the Middle School quad classes will begin. The biggest renovations will be to the Science Lab—which still has traces of experiments from the 1980s—and to Ms. K’s English classroom, which will be enlarged substantially. Most of the remaining classes will be given an upgrade similar to what we did last summer for Ms. Westen’s Latin class—the students and teachers will be thrilled when they return this fall! Next summer we start the Upper School. To do a renovation right is a costly enterprisewe need your help to make it happen.

If you have not yet jumped into our capital campaign, the end of the year is a perfect time. To make a donation of any size now—click here. While we have many priorities that need attention, we are asking you now to focus on the most pressing, which are the renovations and the Sustaining Fund. Thank you!
DONOR HIGHLIGHT

Knight Family

We are grateful to the Kristin Knight Family for their very creative and generous donation to our capital campaign's Classroom Renovation Project. Read below to learn how they chose to make a substantial difference:

In 2010 we moved from San Diego to Santa Fe. We selected Santa Fe Prep as it offered the finest educational opportunity for our daughter. She entered SFP in 7th grade, truly a “fish out of water” leaving the ocean behind. Now she's a junior; we are confident our choice was well made. The quality of education, faculty involvement and support have shone through each year.

The 50th Impact Campaign was beginning around the time Kristin’s dad experienced an unexpected loss of vision that rendered him unable to drive his beloved Porsche 911 Carrera 2. Kristin shared with us that at times a classroom roof leaked and a teacher’s desk drawer fell out when opened. The classrooms were in need of updating to match the quality education.

Much to Jim Leonard’s dismay, using the Porsche as a school vehicle was not practical. However, donating money from the sale of the car seemed a great way to pass on the pleasure Kristin’s father received over the years driving his Porsche to the daily joy that students and teachers would enjoy in their newly renovated classrooms.

All the best now and forward,
Kristin Knight’s Family

Update From Alec Tilly ’13

Despite the cold, I'm really enjoying myself at McGill this semester. I am beginning to feel very comfortable in my new apartment, taking classes I really enjoy, and just learning so much about the world. Montreal is a great city and I've met some amazing people, so it feels pretty good to have found my place…I'm still working on the French, though.

Apart from school, I've been getting really involved with a club called Nourish International. It is an organization across US college campuses (we started the first Canadian chapter) that engages students to be part of the solution to extreme poverty. It has been a great experience, particularly through learning how to find creative solutions to our problems. We've started small businesses on campus and around Montreal in order to have a sustainable and long-lasting impact on development projects abroad. For example, to raise money for these projects, we have begun an initiative to sell affordable and healthy lunches of chili and cornbread in a student lounge on campus, which is a sustainable, profitable venture we can hold once per week.

FEATURED STORIES
THANKS &
SHOUT OUTS
Parents’ Association Rummage Sale 2015—
A World Record!

Jill Gerber and her army of 40+ volunteers have done it again and then some. They gathered, sorted, and priced their way to a rummage record-netting $24,000 for tuition assistance and Breakthrough Santa Fe

We send a big thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and cleaned up (and shopped!) for this annual favorite community event. Especially, we want to thank Jill and her family along with her first lieutenants Tracie Jansen and Carrie Bertram our boutique queens, Michelle Barliant and Kelly Sparks, Christophe O’Mahony, Gretchen Reynolds, and the fairy shoe princess, alumni parent Lynne Comeau, who donated many beautiful new shoes! There are so many more parents who put in a huge amount of time and to you we send a warm thank you as well.

We have cleared space in the library basement so we can start collecting for next year. Feel free to drop off your rummage anytime this summer—we are ready for you.
NCAA Signing
Congratulations to Takis Thayer '15 (Academy of Art University in San Francisco) and Desiray Anderson '15 (Eastern New Mexico University)! Both signed letters of commitment on NCAA signing day last month. Takis will be playing baseball and Desiray was recruited for volleyball. We are so proud of you both!

UNM-PNM Math
Contest Winners
Annie Wu '16 and Jimmy Chen '16 were honored at UNM last month for their participation in the UNM-PNM Statewide High School Mathematics Contest. The goal of the contest is to promote mathematics education in New Mexico by rewarding students, teachers, and their schools for excellence in mathematics. The contest is open to all students in grades 7-12. The contest has two rounds of exams designed to test mathematical potential and ingenuity as well as formal knowledge. Congratulations to Jimmy for taking 4th place and Annie for taking 5th place!
Prep Musical Stylings

Congratulations to our Upper School and Middle School students who performed in the SF Youth Symphony Jazz and Orchestra Concert last month.

WELLNESS WATCH
Altruistic Opportunity

At Prep, we endeavor to “cultivate qualities of character, scholarship, and citizenship in our students that inspire them to act responsibly and compassionately at home, at school, and in the world.” We promote these qualities in many ways across the campus and curriculum, but one specific program is set up to directly encourage citizenship, compassion, and altruism: our service learning program, affectionately known as TAP. When school is out for the summer, you can inspire your child to continue this pro-social behavior and create an individual Teen Action Program. Click here to read more.
