April 2021 Newsletter

My dear fellow students,

A hearty congratulations on finishing academic year 2020-2021!! As the semester and school year come to end, let’s take a minute to take a deep breath, an inner smile, and give ourselves a pat on the back surviving the year--and I say that with deep respect for all those who have not. We have experienced many losses—big and little—this past year, and acknowledging the grief and sadness is certainly important. And we have also seen, felt, experienced, and embodied grace, service, kindness, resilience, and hope. We have joined together in new ways, learned more about one another and leaned on one another, making our beautiful community more connected.

Art of Mindfulness Paint Night:

As Bob Ross says, “There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents!” Art is a natural way to practice mindfulness and a great way to meet fellow Patriots. This session will be led by a master artist. Kerry with UL SciTech and Nikita with Grad Life will show you how to sketch and paint your master piece for the night! So bring your inner artist and get creative. We’ll start with a drawing warm-up and then learn color mixing and painting basics. No experience required! Register for free on Mason360 here.

Surveys: Opportunities to contribute your voice

As our semester comes to a close, we have several survey opportunities for graduate and professional students to share their opinions and thoughts. These survey results will help George Mason make decisions to best support the students, so we encourage you to participate in each of them!
  1. Attention Mason international and professional graduate students, you are invited to participate in a brief, anonymous survey to share your personal & student experiences during the pandemic! GAPSA and a small team of Sociology graduate students are conducting this survey to help document your experiences and use the results to help inform GAPSA's future programming.
  2. The financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be profound and affect the success of both graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.  In order to develop strategies to assist those who have been impacted within our Mason community, the Office of Graduate Education is examining the need for Summer 2021 support for both graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Please complete this survey by April 30, 2021 (Midnight).
  3. In partnership with Student Government, we are collecting feedback from graduate students on the proposed tuition & fees increase for the 2021-2022 academic year. Graduate tuition will be increasing by $441 per unit, and the mandatory student fee will increase by 3%. To find out more and complete the survey, click here.
