As the year comes to a close, we celebrate all of you - the conservation leaders who are finding effective and innovative ways to conserve land and our natural resources. We have seen your creativity and determination at our events - from our Boot Camp in New Haven and Roundtable in Chicago to the first European Boot Camp in Italy - and in the field through our work with the Department of Defense's Sentinel Landscapes and the US Forest Service Cooperative Forestry Program. We cheer your many successes this past year and hope the network can play some role in helping you meet your continuing challenges. Our work is fundamentally about creating authentic connections built on trust, respect and genuine interest. And so we were so pleased and encouraged that so many of you gathered on zoom for the Conservation Finance Network's First Alumni Gathering earlier this month to share your accomplishments, your struggles, and hopes for the coming year. It confirmed for us the essence of the Network and inspired us to redouble our efforts on your behalf in the coming year.

Conservation and Policy Groups Celebrate Senate Introduction of Rural Forest Markets Act. The legislation would enable the USDA to issue guarantees for loans and bonds that help small landowners access carbon markets; incentivize family landowners to adopt climate-friendly forest practices that increase the value of market commodities like carbon, water, and timber; and allow the U.S. to achieve the necessary scale of climate impact by bringing the power of private finance from large corporations to rural America. Conservation leaders have a role in building equitable communities. Can conservation become more equitable? Though historically conservation organizations have focused narrowly on protecting natural resource-based community assets, Patty Hernandez of Headwaters Economics explores how conservation organizations can (and should) better consider how their work can support the livability and affordability of urban areas.
