FLC awarded $1.5M for language revitalization
Fort Lewis College has been awarded $1.5 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the “All Our Nations Language Revitalization Hub,” an initiative centering on Native concepts of animacy in language, empowering language learners and teachers, and teaching language revitalization program design.

FLC is on a roll
In the two years since the firm Guild Education awarded Fort Lewis College $2 million in free consulting, major accomplishments have been realized across campus. With first-year enrollment the highest it's been since 2004, millions of dollars in state and federal grants, and the implementation of new academic options, Fort Lewis College is on a roll.

Trustee with ties to FLC appointed to Board
Paul Major has been appointed by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to the Fort Lewis College Board of Trustees. As the CEO of the Telluride Foundation, Major brings with him invaluable experience in working with large, multifaceted organizations.

Cycling director steps down after championship-filled tenure
Dave Hagen is pedaling on to new ventures after nearly 20 years as director of the cycling team. During his tenure, Hagen led the team to 15 USA Cycling collegiate national championships and helped develop riders into national champions and Olympians.

- Heidi Steltzer, professor of Environment & Sustainability, spoke to VICE about the uniqueness of alpine climates in climate change research. Steltzer notes that mountains have long been a refuge from the ravages of the current climate crisis.
- Two-time All-American Johnny Cox (Exercise Science, ‘94) will be welcomed back by Athletics as the new head football coach. Cox’s experience includes working with other collegiate football teams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- Fort Lewis College Trustee Ellen Roberts concluded her term after three years on the Board. Among her many achievements was the preservation of the Native American Tuition Waiver, an essential program for many Indigenous students at FLC.
- The Fort Lewis College Police Department was among the eight local policing agencies represented in the annual “Shop With a Cop” event. In a heartwarming display of community outreach, 200 local children were given $150 to shop for clothes, home supplies, and Christmas gifts.
- Kaitlin Mattos, assistant professor of Environment & Sustainability, spoke with Anchorage Daily News about the recent infrastructure bill that purports to expand water access and infrastructure for Indigenous communities. Mattos notes that a lack of training in water system management presents a unique problem for the new initiative.
- Maxine Peterson, Durango’s first female mayor in the 1970s, sat down with The Durango Herald to talk about the town’s future. After moving to Durango in 1968 with Fort Lewis College Professor Emeritus Carroll Peterson, Maxine forged a career in politics in partnership with FLC.
- Andrew Gulliford, professor of History and Environmental Studies, discussed a fascinating mystery at Red Mountain Pass with Colorado Public Radio.
- Durango will once again be hosting the annual USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships at Purgatory Resort in October this year.
- Ben Rogers (Anthropology and History, ‘10) was named president of the Rapid City Journal. As a Colorado native, Rogers will bring the skills he learned at Fort Lewis College to bear in his new position.
- Marina Zimmerman (Political Science, ‘08) has filed to run in the June 28 Republican primary in Colorado's 3rd Congressional District. Marina intends to run on a platform focusing on mental health, investment in renewable energy, and stewardship of Colorado’s public lands.
- Janae Hunderman (Spanish, '03) is stepping into an educational consulting position with the state of Colorado. Her transition comes after successfully launching the Business Education Connection, a program that helps students discover their interests and develop their talents through internships and work-based learning. Marie Kehm, former internship coordinator with Career Services at FLC, will be taking over for Hunderman at BEC.
- Andrew Gulliford, professor of History and Environmental Studies, wrote a guest column in The Durango Herald on teaching the events of last year’s attack on the United States Capitol. Gulliford further writes about the incredible responsibility he feels to teach those events accurately.
- Andrea Taylor (Business Administration-Marketing, ‘05) has been appointed as the general manager of the Sky Ute Casino. Taylor has had a distinguished career in service to the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and is also the owner of the Taylor Private Security firm.
- Sarah McChesney (Business Administration-International Business, ‘09) is the new BeLeaf Medical director of marketing. BeLeaf is the largest vertically integrated medical cannabis company in the Four Corners region.
- Michael Remke, professor of Biology, spoke with The Durango Telegraph about the recent change in snowpack averages. Remke voiced his concern that this finding might normalize the dry climate we now inhabit.
