Gwinnett Place Mall Site Revitalization – an Update
Gwinnett Place CID, Gwinnett County, the Atlanta Regional Commission and the planning firm VHB have been diligently working to gather community feedback on the two redevelopment concepts created during April’s three-day public open house and design workshop.

Concept 1 is a proposed mixed-use town center. This concept focuses on lower density with more limited local retail around the proposed central green. The development focus will be primarily residential, averaging three to four stories in height. There would be less public investment with a slower pace of redevelopment, and this concept would be like what many of Gwinnett’s successful downtowns offer today.

Concept 2 is a proposed cultural district that embraces the diversity and the international character already thriving at Gwinnett Place. This concept would require higher public investment, but the redevelopment impact would increase, and the pace of development would be faster. It would include the construction of an iconic cultural center with classrooms, an international library, language lab, office space for nonprofits, along with an entrepreneur incubator space. The central green would come alive with arts, cultural events, an amphitheater and water features. Structured parking would free acres of surface parking for additional green space, trails, bike paths and buildings would average four to six stories high.

The team has engaged with more than 2,000 community members at live events, including the open house and International Night Market in April. This weekend the team will be present at the very site they hope to see redeveloped! Gwinnett County’s Multicultural Festival will take place on Saturday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gwinnett Place Mall. The event will provide community members with another opportunity to give their feedback and share what they would like to see at a future transformed Gwinnett Place Mall site.
The team is also collecting feedback on the Gwinnett Place To Be website where you can see the two design concepts and use emojis to easily share feedback on each one.

Following this second round of robust public engagement, the consultant team will begin detailed work on a final strategy that will be completed by late August and presented to Gwinnett County leadership for implementation.
