We open this winter quarter as a community still in mourning for the loss of Jonathan Rodriguez. We are holding many questions and concerns about how we move forward to heal, restore, and rebuild trust. The next days and weeks will be difficult as we continue to navigate our grief. This journey will be unique to each of us, and yet it is a journey that we take together. We must support each other through this time with compassion, care, and courage.
Our faculty will play a critical role in addressing the needs of our students. You may find yourself in situations where you are unsure of what to do or say. In these moments, remember that being present and listening deeply are critical acts of care. Extend compassion to yourself in these times and be authentic about your own feelings and limitations.
This week in our Community Care Forums, we shared some resources to help support you as you support others. The eight principles of trauma-informed pedagogy offer flexible methods for facilitating safe learning environments and meeting student needs. In addition, we have offered some suggestions for holding a moment of silence with your students.
Our staff is also available to meet with you individually to address any concerns you may have at this time. The Commons will be open for any faculty who wish to gather to reflect at the conclusion of the first week of the quarter on Friday, January 12 from 10-3.
I would like to share the following meditations from Sharon Salzburg for those who may find them helpful. I keep a copy on my desk and read them regularly when I need a moment of self-care. They can be contemplated as a whole or as individual mantras appropriate to specific circumstances.
May I offer my care and presence without conditions, knowing they may be met with gratitude, anger, or indifference.
Might I find the inner resources to truly be able to give.
May I remain in peace and let go of expectations.
May I offer love, knowing I can’t control the course of life, suffering, or death.
I care about your pain yet cannot control it.
I wish you happiness and peace but cannot make your choices for you.
May I see my limits compassionately, just as I view the limitations of others.

Calling all conveners! We invite Evergreen faculty and staff to submit their proposals for Community-initiated Summer Institutes for the 2024 program. Summer Institutes provide an opportunity for faculty and staff professional development, community-building, and collaboration. We rely on our Summer Institute conveners to bring creative, innovative, and timely topics to our community. This is an exciting time in Evergreen’s evolution, and as we are at the cusp of an election year, we invite our conveners to consider how we can build the future – together.

We will find out what puzzles you face when considering adopting an alternative grading scheme, from the scale of the individual assignment to the structure of an entire course. We will share strategies that we use at Evergreen around feedback, revision, and metacognition. We will also learn from your experiences and envision how these strategies and experiences might be integrated into your own teaching.
