Message from the Interim Director of Extension
Where do I start? I was honored to serve at the Dean’s Almost World Famous Burrito Breakfast on Saturday, the early morning of homecoming. I saw some old and new friends and even had a quick conversation with President Robbins as he fueled up at the buffet line. Tonya got into the auction, and it appears we have tickets to a UA Woman’s basketball game! Last week, I was in Yuma for the AgTech Field Day. Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to put the field day together. I even saw an autonomous laser-powered weeder. Finally, keep working on our Needs Assessment Survey. 2022 Statewide Needs Assessment Survey EXTENDED to November 14th
Thanks to everyone for continuing to get the survey out. We are receiving more paper surveys and are entering those as they come. Please continue to reach out to the more distant portions of the state, and remember that young people 15 years and older are encouraged to provide their views, too. Remember that we have surveys and recruitment materials available in Spanish, as well.
You can continue to follow data collection (at the state and county-levels) in real time using this auto-updating link: https://bit.ly/uace2022results.
If you have questions, challenges, or tips to share about the survey distribution process, you can still join us on Wednesdays anytime between 1-2pm for virtual office hours (https://arizona.zoom.us/j/5206218739), or reach out to CRED by email (cred@arizona.edu).
Please note that we are continually updating the FAQ sheet when we receive questions/comments and will continue to drop new resources into your Box folders as they are created or shared with us. Other links, resources, and updates may be found on the CRED Needs Assessment website: https://norton.arizona.edu/uace-needs-assessment-2022.

New Extension Publications
A needs assessment is a formal process that allows one to compare the current outcomes of a situation to the desired outcomes (Stefaniak et al., 2015). This process allows one to make constructive change for the better, focusing on closing the gaps between what a group has versus what they need (Kaufman & English, 1979).
Effects of the Application of Balanced Phosphorus and Potassium Fertilizers on Alfalfa Yield and Yield Components Ayman Mostafa, Worku Burayu and Kyle Harrington
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) stands normally provide the highest yield in their first two or three production years, and then start to decline thereafter, where sometimes re-establishing the stand becomes necessary. As re-establishing a stand is costly, it may be more profitable to improve management practices that will keep stands high yielding for more years. Towards that end, several research projects have been conducted in the low desert of Arizona. An on-farm study at Buckeye, Arizona indicated that application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer at 104 lb P2O5 per acre significantly increased (8.7%) hay yield (Ottman et al 2015). Other research has revealed that various phosphorus fertilizer sources had equal effect on alfalfa forage at equivalent rates of application (Burayu et al 2016) & (Brouder et al. 2005).
