Ensuring healthy holiday feasts
The USDA has awarded Mohamed Fakhr, associate professor of biological science, a major grant to analyze six Campylobacter strains with a view to understanding how they survive on retail meats under aerobic conditions. The knowledge Fakhr and his research team generate could safeguard consumers from this sometimes-fatal pathogen. “My hope,” remarked Fakhr, “is that the safety risk will decrease and consumers’ health will be better protected.”

Zooming with the bulls
For the second year in a row, a TU team scored first place in the annual Investment Portfolio Challenge by taking a hypothetical $5 million and creating a high-return stock market portfolio. The competition “helped me apply the concepts I am learning in my finance and economics courses to the current market,” said Kearstin Hilligoss, one of the winning team’s members. “I was pushed out of my comfort zone, and I am thankful for the experience. It exemplified how TU students excel when compared to their peers and have promising careers ahead of them.”

Playing through the pandemic
While intramurals this fall might not have meant passes spiraling through the air or balls dribbling down the court, Campus Recreation and TU Esports ensured students were able to enjoy an array of lively competitions virtually, all without risking viral infection. One of the players, Duke Schaffner, said being able to play games on his own time was a real “perk” of the intramural league and that “mixing the competitive nature of Rocket League with frat and departmental rivals heightened the stakes.”

Creating COVID-19 connections
The COVID-19 pandemic is prompting widespread yearning for connections with other people. From virtual classrooms and workshops to public outreach through lectures and seminars, the TU community is rising to the challenge of using digital technologies to bring people together so they can learn, share ideas and plan for a better future.
