Should We Sing in Church?
Music is mentioned many times in the Bible, in fact there are over 1,150 verses in the Bible that reference music, using some form of the following words: Music, Melody, Song, Hymn, Instrument, Sound, Play, Blow (Blow the trumpet!), Noise (Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!), Psalm, Harp, Lyre, Timbrel, Trumpet, Horn, Voice. There are more than 40 references in the psalms to vocal music alone, and at least 27 psalms speak of instrumental music.
Psalm 95:1. Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation!
Psalm 150;3-5. Praise God with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrels and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals!
Psalm 98;1,4,5,6. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things—. Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the rams horn—shout for joy before the Lord, the King.
In the New Testament we are instructed to “sing and make melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). In Colossians 3:16 we are to teach and admonish “one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Nowhere in the Bible does it say—-don’t sing if you don’t think you have a good voice, or you don’t think you can carry a tune. No excuses—just sing! Sing to the Lord all the whole earth!!
